A little OT, offing the HDTV for a nice NEW anilog set

Recommended Posts

I just can't hang with my Old school consoles on my HDTV set any longer, even my Dreamcast through S-Video is soo washed-out looking :(

I bought a new 20" for the bedroom and it's soo nice seeing my PS2, DC, NES, Genny and 5200 on it :) soo much cleaner and sharper. So now I must upgrade(lol) the living room set to anilog also.

Now I need some imput from you gaming anilog set vets, I've been looking around and it seems that these's set's are shrinking to only a handfull of choices compaired to mass amounts of HDTV's.

I'm looking in the 27"-32" range? $400 and less please.

What were you using? Plasma? LCD? Anything with discrete pixel elements has to scale a picture that's not at the optimal resolution, and that indeed will very likely make your picture look muddy. Also, gun games are unlikely to work with anything other than a CRT in 480i mode.

I have a Sony 32" HS (the next line below VVEGA) CRT, and it's great. 480p mode is amusing in how the pixels from non-interlaced games are two scan lines high, but the picture can't be beat.

It'll display HD, but most of the stuff I watch is 4:3. I even have the DVI input hooked up to a PC. I can only get 640x480, and even after adjusting for minimum overscan the top 20 or so lines of the screen don't display, but the picture quality is so much better than S-video.

I just bought an Advent 2055 20" flat screen TV from Kmart for $109 on sale, normally $129. The picture quality is great and it has RF, composite, S-video and component video input. I had recently also bought a Philips 20" flat screen TV for $150, specifically for hooking game systems to. I was looking for the Advent TV before I ended up buying the Philips but I didn't know where to find one locally. The cool thing about the Advent TV, according to the specs, they are multisystem(PAL, NTSC, SECAM) on the A/V inputs, but not the tuner.

Whatever tv you buy, may I suggest you make sure it has s-video inputs. Svideo never really caught on with consumers yet the quality boost is great. An nice thing to have if your budget prohibits having component connections. Get an universal console video cable with s-video output. There are plenty that supports GC/PS2/Xbox on one cable. You migh still find an older model which also had a Dreamcast output. Also get the RCA Genny cable and you will be all set.

I consider the lack of success of s-video in the US to be the manufacturers' fault.

I always wanted s-video, but never had a TV capable of using it.

That was the problem.

Virtually no one had s-video capable equipment, because no one would add the capability untill more sets with it came out. And it wasn't going to show up in anything but high-end sets untill more equipment could use it. And with equipment manufacturers waiting for TV manufacturers and TV manufacturers waiting for equipment manufacturers, nothing ever happened.

Similar situation happened with the digital TV rollout.

The TV manufacturers resisted it because no one was broadcasting it. Broadcasters weren't going to upgrade untill TVs could pick it up.

...

But then the FCC forced them to start broadcasting in digital.

Now it's just the TV manufacturers trying to keep their profit margins up as long as possible by not adding the few bucks a digital tuner costs them to anything if they can help it, and who cares about the chaos when analog broadcasts are shut off.

Hell, even the high-end sets don't usually come with DTV tuners(though they at least have the proper inputs for one).

Analog TV looks great on the 30" HDTV I bought at Wal-Mart - and it has a built-in HDTV digital tuner that works with an antenna, and it also works to get basic (unencrypted) local HDTV stations on cable, too. I think it helps that it's a good old-fashioned "regular CRT TV". And it's under $600. And the picture on High Def shows (like American Idol last night) is scary good.
