kevin242 #1 Posted March 7, 2005 Okay, this weekend I picked up a Nintendo 64, it came with two controller a memory card, power supply and one game (madden 64)... but no a/v cable, how hard will it be for me to track one down? What is the cheapest way? also what are some standout games for this system? Do you guys think the Nin64/library will ever have any value? Also how does the N64 rate against the Dreamcast? Thank you so much for all your help.
christianscott27 #2 Posted March 7, 2005 the cable is no problem, its the same one used on the superNES and the gamecube. if you dont already have one they're quite easy to get at any gameshop. games really depends on the player, for me star wars rogue squadron made the system. i think graphics wise its obviously behind the dreamcast but it has a lot to offer. right now is a good time to get into the N64, the games are pretty cheap and easy to find. I know that "most fun games" are a matter of opinion, but I find by asking what you guys on AA think are the best games for a system I tend to get a good idea the games I will like and usually the recommendations are not the obvious choices, so it helps alot. People around here have alot of strong opinions and passion for retro gaming which is cool.
joeybastard #4 Posted March 7, 2005 Yeah, the av cable from Gamestop is $5 used. They'll have a ton of them. I like my N64 a lot. I think I'm one of the few who absolutely love the controller too. It's not as good as the DC but very few game consoles are. Definitely look for: Super Mario 64 Star Fox 64 All 3 Mario Parties Rogue Squadrun Goldeneye Blast Corp Pilot Wings
sega saturn x #5 Posted March 7, 2005 The system dosent really have the game selection of the dreamcast but it has some decent games. Wipeout 64 is good plus it generaly costs 6$ that star wars pod racing game is also good if you dont have the dreamcast version. One game i can tell you to stay away from is jet force gemini thanks to the N64's controler limitations (only 1 stick) this game is a nightmare to play. Plus its uber common so just avoid it starfox and kirby are by far the best games i have ever played on it. And mario if you have never played it before but lets face it mario 64 is kind of over shadowed by sunshine. My advice unless you know about a good third party game ahead of time just stay away from any non nintendo game.
JB #6 Posted March 7, 2005 ... that star wars pod racing game is also good if you dont have the dreamcast version... Though the N64 version has a code for twin stick control, to get something more resembling the movie driving style.
Lost Monkey #7 Posted March 7, 2005 And mario if you have never played it before but lets face it mario 64 is kind of over shadowed by sunshine. That is definitely a matter of opinion... Mario 64 (to me) is miles better than Mario Sunshine. Mario Kart 64 is pretty good, as are the Mario sports titles... Zelda... Golden Eye... I've heard good things about Banjo Kazooie..
n8littlefield #8 Posted March 7, 2005 Conker is good (just not something to play with kiddies around). If you don't have the Cube version already, Smash Bros is good. Obviously Mario 64 and the Zelda games are fun.
Blur2040 #9 Posted March 7, 2005 Random List of Games I like: Conker's Bad Fur Day (Best Game for the System, Graphics and Gameplay, and General Fun) Goldeneye Blast Corps Perfect Dark Super Mario 64 Starfox 64 Mario Kart 64 Zelda Ocarina Of Time Zelda Majora's Mask BODY HARVEST Space Station Silicon Valley Banjo Kazooie Banjo Tooie
Dones #10 Posted March 7, 2005 I like my N64 a lot. I think I'm one of the few who absolutely love the controller too. It's not as good as the DC but very few game consoles are. Make that two . I never had any problems with N64's gamepad. also what are some standout games for this system? Do you guys think the Nin64/library will ever have any value? Also how does the N64 rate against the Dreamcast? Thank you so much for all your help. Dreamcast is a current gen console so N64 fairs worse in the graphics department. The notion that Dreamcast is on the same generation as N64 because of its short life is an interesting but common misconception. Dreamcast library is smaller but it's more varied and offers more of that "SEGA arcade" charm. It also has plenty of quirky titles and 3D shmups that makes it appealing with some hardcore gaming groups. The N64 library has the usual Nintendo franchise updates and lacks in the RPG genre. N64 is heavy on racing games and it also has plenty of third party games of varying quality. RARE ruled the N64 with strong offerings like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker and Banjo Kazooie. If you like wrestling games then try WWF: No Mercy. You will be hard pressed not to find something that interests you.
Red 5 #11 Posted March 7, 2005 Donkey Kong 64 ! Great game. These have already been said, but I think the other must owns are: Perfect Dark Goldeneye Mario 64 Mario Kart 64 Harvest Moon Banjo Kazooie (and Tooie) Conker's Bad Fur Day
vdub_bobby #12 Posted March 7, 2005 Most of these have already been said, but I thought I'd chime in also: My favorites (not in any order): Zelda: OOT Zelda: MM MarioKart64 Goldeneye WaveRace 64 Super Mario 64 Tony Hawk I and II are pretty sweet, but better on Dreamcast (I don't have 'em on any other platforms). My brother and his wife were really into Harvest Moon 64 for a while. San Francisco Rush - my cousin and I rented this about 5 years ago and played it to death with a bunch of friends - we had a pretty sweet time
Avid Fan #13 Posted March 7, 2005 I've been wanting an N64 for a while now. With tax return coming up, and the weather allowing the flea markets to open, I cant wait. I've even promised myself that I'll pick up a dreamcast too if I can keep everything under $100, which should be easy since last year people were thropwing N64 in front of me for $10, but I was looking strictly for atari I never really got to play an N64, and now I really want one to try games like: Perfect Dark Star Wars games Duke Nukem (closest thing to the PC version on any console, my all time favorite FPS) and I'll pick up some games I know I like already like Resident Evil 2 Cruisin etc Mortal Kombat 4 and Trilogy BTW, I've been playing Majora's Mask on the Cube, and I love it. Would it be worth it to get it for N64? Is the framerate any better? thats my only nag with the Cube version, the sound doesnt get to me
+kisrael #14 Posted March 7, 2005 Some great lists already... This was a fantastic multiplayer system, and repopularized (except for Sony, @[email protected])&@^#^...) 4 controller ports builtin. So: BattleTanx and especiall its "Global Assault" sequel are the best tank games yet. Nothing better in a "Tokyo Wars" like mold on the current systems, much to my sadness. Mario Kart, Party (1-3), Tennis, and if you like the sport Golf... Some good solo games as well (actually Battle Tanks has some fun single player and co-op as well) Zelda: OoT, Starfox 64... some odd ball favs like Space Station Silicon Valley and Blast Corps... and Rogue Squadron...yum. Really an underrated system. I'm not fully convinced going with carts was a mistake...by the time Conkers BFD came out, they had the storage amount problem beat. I'd say, mostly thanks to the power of he Nintendo franchises, N64 has a more classic library than the DC. N64 brought me into (then) modern gaming...Star Fox 4 was just too gorgeous to miss. kevin242 #19 Posted March 8, 2005 anyone care to explain Ram Packs? Ive been reading this game supports "Ram Packs," so I assume this is an add on that I donot have. Will games that use Ram packs still work without them? What does it do and is it worth me getting one?

Will games that use Ram packs still work without them? What does it do and is it worth me getting one? If you open the cover on the top of the N64 (I recall it is labelled "expansion port") - you should be able to see what kind of expansion pack is in your machine... The default pak is black and the expanded ram packs have a red top on them... You may already have one...

Will games that use Ram packs still work without them? What does it do and is it worth me getting one? Its really only worth getting the memory expansion pak if you want to play Donkey Kong 64, Zelda: Majoras Mask and the complete Perfect Dark. On the top of the N64 there is a little door that says "memory expansion" open that and if you see red, you already have the pak installed. If not, they usually sell for around $15-$20 on E-Bay or Gamestop.

Dones #24 Posted March 8, 2005 The Ram Pack upgrades your Nintendo64 from 4 to 8 megabytes of RAM. Many games use this extra RAM to display high resolution modes. The first game to use the rampack was Rogue Squadron. Except for a select few (eg, Perfect Dark and DK64), the use of the ram pack is completely optional and games that support it will be able to run without it. I haven't checked in a while but the expansion ram is one of the few N64 add-ons that goes for a lot on ebay.
Dones #25 Posted March 8, 2005 Also, it breaks on a few games, most notably Space Station Silicon Valley (pity, that) I heard really good things from the folks at IGN at the time of the game's release. I never really got into it but the premise was very interesting imo. Same thing happened with Rocket Robot on Wheels. Did you get to play that one kisrael?
