Revolution news - WiFi and backward compatible.

Recommended Posts

I think N is going to have to do better than backwards compatibility with Gamecube games nobody bought and wireless DS connectivity to claim a proper "revolution."

The Gamecube was certainly not a complete failure. It had quite a few great selling titles, Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros, RE4... Heck, Soul Calibur II sold best on the Cube.

I think that today's annoucement was more to establish that Nintendo does have online plans. I expect the Revolution will truly have some unique features that have yet to be revealed.

The real news for me today was online Animal Crossing DS. Not the biggest surprise in the world, but definately nice to have it verified!

"Even though the game experience will be far different on Revolution

God, I just smell a stinky letdown coming. Unless this thing works like the friggin holodeck from The Next Generation, we've been there.

Shame its a generation late. The other two have established networks and will only continue to improve them with time. Nintendo is now playing catchup because to date they haven't supported an online community. Well extensively at least. I also don't see connecting the DS and new gameboy to the revolution as a revolution either.

Speaking of that, Id really like to know what the "revolution" is going to be? One giant button that does everything? No buttons, just a giant stick???? Lots of questions still unanswered at this point. Backwards compatability and online are pretty common.

I was actually not going to buy a next gen console since I'm happier on the older consoles. I love my Cube but my heart really belongs to the 8bit and 16bit era. However if this is backwards compatible, I probably will get one.

Now I don't have to get a GC when they drop in price though. :D Ill just wait for the Revolution to drop in price and play all the first party cube games on it. :ponder:

Backwards is always cool. I've got 2 cubes as it is, and knowing I can have a 3rd machine to play my games is just great. I hope those pics that leaked out a while back of the revolution are real, that thing was about the size of an ashtray. I love small systems, too bad the treamcast never made it stateside. PLEASE SYSTEM LINK SUPPORT, online is cool too, but loooking at the face of your opponent as you crush them is gratifying to me

It's funny that everybody is harping on the name. It's a name. Products have flashy names sometimes.

Tell me, does Cheer do something special to your clothes that makes you cheer? If you say yes, I'll know you're lying.

Folks can try to count out the big N, but I wouldn't. I don't think they'll ever dominate like in the NES days but that doesn't equate to failure. If a product makes profit, it's a success in my book.

I had a Cube, sold it awhile ago as I just didn't have the time to play multiple systems anymore, and the only games I played for it were the Nintendo originals. I do have DS though.

I don't think that Nintendo made a huge mistake not supporting online play more with the cube. All the Cube owners I know bought it for their 2nd or 3rd modern system, basically buying it for Metroid/Resident Evil/Zelda. They didn't need online play to sell the system, and I don't think it would have helped their sales. More 3rd party support would have helped though.

Compared to the launch of the current generation, broadband is now much more widespread, people are much more used to home networks, and Nintendo has always been a company where the games come first, technology second. It makes total sense that they would want their online to be as invisible as possible and wait for good wireless connectivity.

Nintendo is the one running around talking about paradigm shifts and no longer playing games the same way.

Well, considering you haven't played any of the new games, how can you say they aren't revolutionary?

Granted, I doubt it too but I'm willing to wait and see what it's all about before automatically condeming it based on a name. It just seems like you guys are acting as if hype is something new.

I agree with that just because they aren't the top seller doesn't mean they can't make money. Look at apple .

I could say the same for the other camps. If [insert company here] wouldn't have included [insert feature here] then consumers probably would have reacted the same. Those marketers sure have more hold on us than we care to admit.

What's the point of having WiFi when a recent comment from Nintendo stated that they don't believe people want to play games online?

I would say that it's quite possible that Nintendo caved in...although Reggie said in an interview they see one of the failings of the Cube is that they did not give 3rd parties the tools to go online as a problem. He doesn't say that Nintendo should have released more online games. I would say that they will do online only when it makes sense (Mario Kart, Animal Crossing) but that they really are doing it for the 3rd parties...
