video game addict
Does anyone have a Bally forsale? I'm looking for one? I'll settle for this Bally, if the Professional video arcade system can not be found.
rockman_x_2002
You know, I've often wondered about this myself when I once saw a commercial for some exercise equipment made by Bally. Naturally I noticed the curved "B" in the ad was strikingly similar to the same "B" I rememered from the Ms. Pac-Man machine in the arcade at the local mall. So I guess there is some connection. I would assume so anyway. If anyone figures anything out about this shed some light. I'm interested in this too.
Stingray
I never noticed that. Probably because physical fitness workout stuff is not my thing. Maybe Bally felt so bad about making so many of us fat & lazy that they went into the wieght loss business. -S
joeybastard
They were probably affliated at one time. The Bally Corporation has done many many different things over the years and spun off a few different companies that still have Bally in the name. At one time the parent company did all of this stuff: Bally Gaming and Systems(Slot machines, slot data retrieval systems) Now owned by Alliance Gaming but still called Ballys Bally/Williams made pinball machines Bally Park Place owns casinos(Now Caesars Entertainment) Bally/Midway made videogames and the Astrocade They even used to make coffee machines and refridgeration units for restautrants. Jess Ragan
Didn't Williams buy Midway from Bally in the late 1980's? That was my impression, anyway. JR
Big Player
I bought a lifetime membership to Bally Total Fitness on eBay a few years ago. I'm sure how smart this was because the ones in the Cincinnati area are just hanging on there financially. At least that's the impression I get in how they run the places. JR Probably, the company histories I found from various sources had them selling/starting/renaming/spinning off new companies all over the place. That's why I figured the fitness one at least started out as part of the same company.
NovaXpress
Bally was big on selling their name to other companies. Williams purchased the right to call themselves Bally/Midway, for example. Bally Total Fitness is it's own coproration, they bought the name and logo. There is no other connection to Bally casinos, Bally freezers, Bally amusements or all the other weird Bally-derived companies.
sku_u
The Bally that would eventually become Bally Midway started in the year 1931 with the sale of the Pinball machine Bally-Hoo. If you really want to find out if there's a connection, start there.
reedmarlowe
I used to sell memberships at bally's and they showed us a video in training about the company and how i t all basically started from the same thing but is totally separate now. However, I can't say whether or not Bally Total Fitness was originally a part of it or if that was later, but the name does come from the same arcade and casino stuff. They are probably doing alright, in my experience working for them they're just cheap as hell. They have pretty much all the equipment that you need, but it's poorly maintained, or at least older. All they really want is sales. They really don't even care if you go, they've got you on an 18 mo. contract anyway! They've got that commision schedule totally rigged, too! I was 3rd in the state of Minnesota for Bally's sales in my last month(out of about 50), and I didn't make shit so I quit! But, I did manage to cut myself a pretty good deal on a membership when I left...

I had heard some rumors around the club I visit that they were in trouble and going to close that particular one. I guess they were just rumors, since it was a few months ago. reedmarlowe
Yeah, in Minnesota, they're mostly all older clubs that were bought out by Bally's and here there's always rumors that one club will close or that a new one will be built. Even when they do build a new one out here they won't do a pool or basketball court. I've only seen one new club and none close. Actually, I'm not even sure if they put a running track in that new one.
J.Max
At one point, the name "Bally" was almost used as a substitute for pinball. Listen to The Who's "Pinball Wizard": I thought I was the Bally table king But now I hand my pinball crown to him
