Stingray #1 Posted March 15, 2005 Looking to buy a cheap Dreamcast. I don't want a perfect new in box system. One with a crappy yellowed case is fine provided it still works. This is for a project I'm building, the case won't be used at all. It does need to be able to boot homebrewed emulator disks, I'm under the impression that some of the later ones won't do this. I also need two controllers, same deal as the system, they can be cruddy looking, but need to be working, again the cases won't be used. I can pick up one locally for $25 so obviously I'd like to spend less than that. -S
jeepnut24 #2 Posted March 15, 2005 Whats the project.... You might check EB/Gamestop. Last I checked I think they were in the $20s used. Pretty cheap.
Stingray #3 Posted March 15, 2005 I'm putting the guts of a DC inside a NES case. I'll also be modding NES controllers to work with the DC. Obviously this system will be set up to run NES games in emulation. Saw someone else who made one on another forum and got the bug. -S
Lost Monkey #4 Posted March 15, 2005 Has NES emulation on the DC improved enough to warrant this? The last NES emu I tried (NesterDC - circa 2002 ) required frameskipping and many games were just unplayable...
Stingray #5 Posted March 15, 2005 Has NES emulation on the DC improved enough to warrant this? The last NES emu I tried (NesterDC - circa 2002 ) required frameskipping and many games were just unplayable... I guess it must have. I just tried it for the first time and it was really fantastic. A few of the games I tried out had some audio problems, but not many. Almost everything I tried ran perfectly. -S
Stingray #6 Posted March 15, 2005 Just found this page which shows which DC will work and which will not: http://www.dcemulation.com/article-supported.htm Toward the bottom right of the label is a box with NTSC inside it. To the left of that is a circle with a number inside it. Should be either a 1 or a 2. I need a 1. Thanks. -S
masschamber #7 Posted March 15, 2005 The nes emulator is excellent on nes, full speed full sound, or atleast very close
The Sage of Sega #8 Posted March 15, 2005 I have a unit available. The case has gone to hell but it works great and plays CD-Rs. I'd be willing to provide the hookups and two controllers with it as well (the analog on one of the controllers is kinda screwy but I'm sure you won't need that for your NES project ). Stingray #9 Posted March 15, 2005 You're correct, analog won't be used at all. Sending you a PM. -S
hailrazer #10 Posted March 17, 2005 It's been found out that ALL Dreamcasts will boot CD-R's . If a Dreamcast won't boot a CD-R then the laser is going bad. And yes I've personally had ALL the different Dreamcast models and tried them all and they ALL will boot CD-R's.
