sandmountainslim #1 Posted March 20, 2005 I was sitting here enjoying my Vader model VCS thinking about all the years of enjoyment I have gotten outta what is probably the best birthday present I ever recieved I got it for my Bday in '82 and though I now own three other VCS systems it is the only one I ever play. I was just wondering how many of you are still using the same 2600 you had in the Pre-Crash days? I know several of you have had to buy new ones due to yard sales etc. but who is still groovin on your original?
Dr Galaga #2 Posted March 20, 2005 Yep, still use mine (my dad claims that he is just letting me borrow it). I spent about $30 two years ago to get the sound working again, but it was worth it!
chubsta #3 Posted March 20, 2005 2 years ago my then-girlfriend made me sell the vcs i had since '79 which i had always loved and used to play defender II and gorf..... so, no, i dont use my origional, but i sure do miss it!

The MilkMan #5 Posted March 20, 2005 made me sell the vcs i had since '79 which i had always loved and used to play defender II and gorf..... I think you're looking at the answer to your question right there! Hey, everybody has clutter to get rid of...but between clutter and an Atari? I'd offer her the door as an option
The MilkMan #6 Posted March 20, 2005 Oh yeah..my original '78 was stolen. House got broke into and among other things, the Atari went too. So now I have to enjoy my Atari playing with someone else's past. (one a friend gave to me, and couple other from thrift salavge)

Now I'd never advocate game playing over having a healthy social life (I'd never say such a thing ). I don't know the reasons, but if anyone made me sell something I'd had for years, I'd really begin to question their motives and long-term viability. ubersaurus #8 Posted March 21, 2005 I would if I hadn't, uh, busted it trying to fix a broken controller port.
Big Player #9 Posted March 21, 2005 I used to use my light sixer as my main 2600 but a problem with the power jack made me put it in retirement. I'm sure it just requires some simple soldering to fix, but that's beyond me now. I haven't used a soldering iron since high school and I wasn't very good with it then. I use a vader as my current 2600.
Recycled #10 Posted March 21, 2005 I'm enjoying a light sixer right now....that's what I had when I was a kid---so it kinda feels like I'm playing my original!!! (I know, that doesn't count!!
ATARIPITBULL #11 Posted March 21, 2005 I wish I had my first 2600 system, but it burned up with my old house in Detroit around 1985, but I now have like 14 of them, but I play my games on a heavy sixer, just like my first one.
Chris-in-NJ #12 Posted March 21, 2005 I've still got one of my original CX26 joysticks. It's never been repaired and still works great. It had a workout with some Jr. Pac-Man this morning. Only wish the rubber on the bottom wouldn't rub off onto my fingers, leaving me nasty black stains.
Nostalgic #13 Posted March 21, 2005 I still use the same 2600 that I had as a child. I also have the same paddles, keyboard controllers, and many of the games from my youth as well. I even have the switch box and instruction manual, while my parents use the box to store Christmas tree ornaments. Sadly the joysticks didn't survive, but the couple of Tac-2s that I bought as replacements are still mostly going strong.
alex.james #14 Posted March 21, 2005 I'm still only using my original A2600 I was given brand new when I was 10. Alas this was not pre-crash though but 1991. The 2600 box even has a copyright date of 1991 on it. I can't believe how long they kept cranking the 2600 out for sale in Australia!
Cassidy Nolen #15 Posted March 21, 2005 Still have both of my childhood ones....the woody that I had at Mom's does not work great, but Nolan signed it (it sits very nicely on top of the collection ). My Vader I had at Dad's was my main system for a few years (recently). I have a semi-decent looking woody I use for testing games and mostly playing on. Sometimes I break out the Vader. Still use my Wico stick and paddles from the old days, though. Cassidy
Zonie #16 Posted March 21, 2005 I still use my original 1978 Heavy Sixer when company comes over. I usually use my 7800 when I play alone, however. The Sixer is starting to ge a bit worn out.
Stella'sGhost #17 Posted March 21, 2005 I still use my 1983 four switch model with fake wood grain. It still works perfectly. Same joysticks as well! I have another VCS as back up but at this rate I'll never need to use it.
sku_u #18 Posted March 21, 2005 I still have my original heavy 6er, but have not been using it much lately. There are several things wrong with it that I haven't gotten around to fixing. We still have my wife's launch day 5200 with low SN and still use it.
jeepnut24 #19 Posted March 21, 2005 We didn't have an 2600. My parents didn't want us to have a video game console. Later on they got us a PC instead of a NES. Worked well for me because it forced me to learn to program as a kid and now Im a pro coder. Needless to say, that is part of why I now collect 2600 and NES. To see what I was missing as a child. That and so I can pass these memories and ideas on to my children and their friends.
Voch #20 Posted March 21, 2005 My original Atari 2600 died an early death back in the mid 80's thanks to my grandmother's need to smoke while playing and accidentially using it as an ashtray on more than one occasion. Later we had an Atari 7800 (my only 7800-specific game the pack-in Pole Position) but my Mom sold that at a yard sale when I went off to college in 1990. The Ataris I have now were gifts from friends and recent purchases.
Lauren Tyler #21 Posted March 21, 2005 My original Atari 2600 died an early death back in the mid 80's thanks to my grandmother's need to smoke while playing and accidentially using it as an ashtray on more than one occasion. That stinks, I'm sorry to hear about that man. My 2600 has a problem with the port where the power cord plugs in. Usually I'd need to wiggle it around for the connections to register, but now it doesn't seem to be registering at all, so I'm using my Atari 7800 instead. Mental Vortex #22 Posted March 21, 2005 Like others on here, I didn't have an Atari when it first came out. We had an Intellivision instead, which my mom gave away sometime in the late 80s WITHOUT asking my brother or I about it first! It especially hurts when I think that we had some hard to find games such as Buzz Bombers and others, but that's for another thread. My brother found me a Jr. in 1993, and since then I bought a 7800, a 4 and 6 switch model and also have my wife's old Telegames console. I use the 7800 for everything as I haven't had any problems with any of my games on it.
Voch #23 Posted March 21, 2005 My original Atari 2600 died an early death back in the mid 80's thanks to my grandmother's need to smoke while playing and accidentially using it as an ashtray on more than one occasion. That stinks, I'm sorry to hear about that man. Actually, Grandma LOVED Atari. But she also LOVED smoking. I have a stack of Ataris now (6-switch, 4-switch, Junior, Gemini, and a ColecoVision Module #1...still want a Vader and an Intellivision adapter) so it's no big deal. candiru #24 Posted March 21, 2005 My childhood Vader was my primary system up until recently when I discovered that for some reason it is incompatible with Time Pilot. Now I have a pristine 4-switch Woody hooked up. My 2600 and gaming in general have been neglected lately. I can't even find the time to play the high score club games anymore. davepesc #25 Posted March 21, 2005 I wish. I gave my original 2600, along with all of my games, to my cousin sometime in the late '80s. I often wonder if she still has it and if she is willing to sell.
