figgler #1 Posted March 22, 2005 Hmm, seems we all missed out on what could have been a great game. Flipping through the 1987 Official Nintendo Player's Guide, I saw this blurb for the "Coming Soon" Return of Donkey Kong: This is your chance to get hold of that barrel-throwing mischief-making rascal, Donkey Kong and take control! Nintendo's best known character is back. And he's up to more tricks and trouble than you can imagine! Of course there aren't any screen shots. Does anyone know what this game eventually became or what happened to it? This never came to fruition in Japan either as far as I know. What's the scoop? davidbrit2 #3 Posted March 22, 2005 Yeah, I've wondered about that ever since I read it back in 1987. Heh. As far as I know, nothing ever came of it. I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually evolved into DK '94 for GB, though. Or hell, it might have even ended up as the basis for Donkey Kong Country, judging from the description. NovaXpress #4 Posted March 22, 2005 I've never even seen any discussion about what happened to this game. You'd assume that work was done or they wouldn't have plugged it in the magazine. DK3 was released many years prior to this.
Nukey Shay #5 Posted March 22, 2005 Nope...it wasn't supposed to be DK3, that game was already done. Return of Donkey Kong was a planned sequel to the arcade hit and its follow-up brethren on the NES. It is unclear exactly what the game entailed, as the few released snippets of information on the game suggest you played both against Donkey Kong, but sometimes as Donkey Kong. The game was shelved before screenshots and information were released for unknown reasons. The game may have been a predecessor to the Donkey Kong game that appeared on the Gameboy. The dual-character thing sounds something like what eventually was made for DKC. It could be that work for a -very- early concept of DKC was being hashed over, but scrapped due to the upcoming SNES which could handle a game of that type better? That's what was supposedly done with SimCity...and it's not the only vaporware game announced for the NES in the late 80's.
Crimefighter #6 Posted March 22, 2005 Hate to break it to you but there are DKC roms for the 8-bit NES out there. Obviously the graphics aren't SNES quality.
Avid Fan #7 Posted March 22, 2005 I thought they were called Donkey Kong Land? And the ROMS are called Super Donkey Kong. Funny, I posted a thread asking questions about this over a year ago, and I got ZERO replies, at least no one was holding out on me since it seems nobody knows anything

There is also a version of DKC for GBC. Super DK as far as I know is the name for DK Country in Japan
NovaXpress #10 Posted March 22, 2005 Tons of SNES games were pirated for the Famicom. The Street Fighter 2 was actually rather impressive.

Crimefighter #13 Posted March 23, 2005 Course it was pirated, though I wonder how they were able to port it.
TheRedEye #14 Posted March 24, 2005 Course it was pirated, though I wonder how they were able to port it. It's not ported at all, they just wrote a short NES platformer that somewhat resembles Donkey Kong Country.
