Why are YOU waiting to get your PSP?

Recommended Posts

First off: This is NOT for people who already have one or have no intention of getting one. . .

Anyway, I want to know the reasons why other people are waiting on the sidelines like me to get one.

My reasons are: (in no order)

2nd production run to improve battery life

2nd production run to improve various pixel complaints

MORE software to be developed for dumping movies. (I know there's some already.)

Fix the bugs from GT4 and bring "corrected" version to PSP.

Barebones pack price drop to 200 even (not too important)

Looking for Mame/GBA/NES emulators to come out full force.

Could there be/is there writeable UMDs in the pipe?

Bluetooth/Wireless headphone option to listen to MP3s while PSP is in my bag. (pipedream?)

I'm sure this is going to a platform that will last for a long time. I have no doubt that there are going to be KILLER apps and hacks, though not neccessarily 1st party. In the meantime, I'll be waiting to see what comes out. . .somewhat patiently. ;)

My main reason is that it costs almost as much money as I get in a month. Eating all four weeks of the month is more important to me than having a PSP, but I will get one sooner or later. I need to remember to add it to my Amazon.com wish list. Maybe some rich nut will buy me one out of the kindness of his or her heart. Crazy rich people are cool.

I'm waiting for the price to drop primarily, and even then, I'm really not sure. The game price is kind of frightening, given that I rarely spend $50 on a new PS2 game!

For now, I'm playing GBA SP and DS. I'm going to see what the rest of the year (and E3) brings.

If they could lower the system to $200ish and the games to $40 I think I'd buy. Especially with Lumines, Wipeout and Hot Shots Golf...

1) Cost is the number one reason...

2) Low battery life...

3) Reliability, Sony isn't known for great release quality

4) Not a valid replacement for my current HD based MP3 player

5) Outrageous prices on the memory cards

I just can't justify $250 for a handheld that more or less only games. Sure it plays movies, but not DVD movies and Im not going to buy movies on UMD or take the time to transfer movies to a memory card. I also can't justify it as an MP3 player. Ive got a DJ that is 15Gb and the battery lasts 10-12 hours on one charge. This PSP wouldn't make it a whole day or work as an mp3 player. So for me, it will only be for playing games and the novalty of showing off pictures and short movies to friends. At $250, it just isn't worth it. Not to mention sony isn't known for quality initial product runs. Remember the ps2 problems at launch??? Ill be waiting for a serious price drop and hopefully better battery times.

After all, a plane trip to california is almost 6 hours with layovers, Id hate to have to charge it back up half way through the trip.... :x

Will never get it. Of course I'm one of those playstation hating insane people. The only reason I own a playstation at all is I found one of those mini ones at a garage sale for 1 dollar.

Also the battery life is crap.

I'm perfectly happy with my GBA. I wouldn't mind getting a DS down the road just for the nicer screen but that's about it.

The PSP looks like a nice piece of technology but in portables, I want simpler games. I just find them more fun to play on the go. I don't care about it's better graphics, I'm more than happy with the GBA's. To tell a dirty little secret, the SNES/Genny era of graphics is my favorite to play and while the GBA games usually are above that, it's not all 3D crap. Considering how complicated most modern games are, I just don't think they lend themselves to portability.

The only thing really interesting to me about it would be emulators for the classic systems. If they get a good emulators for the classic systems, I'd probably get one when the price dropped. Call me cheap or whatever but no game system is worth $250 to me.

@Kepone

I did a PSP search and didn't see anything pertaining to this specific topic. Yes I see the rants and rave topics, but I wanted a topic JUST dedicated to why people are waiting. Not for owners or naysayers.

In response to some of the other posts, I will never buy a UMD movie. Ever. I own a pretty massive DVD library and believe if you own it, you own it. I would transfer my flicks to MS and watch them that way. It's transcoded and lossy, but UMD is not exactly DVD quality either. If I want hi-res I'll sit on the couch and stare at 46 inches.

My commute involves parking, taking a train to one station and then taking a tram to ANOTHER station. And this is all on one facility. (Cat X airport.) So watching TIVO'd shows or movies or listening to MP3s is a very real use for me if I got one. Bottom line is I'm not too concerned about paying $40 for a game or $x.xx for a UMD movie, because I probably won't. I reckon I'd spend a good majority of my time using it for things other than what Sony originally intended.

Please only reply to this thread if you ARE going to buy one, but are waiting. I want to know about the fencesitters, not the early adopters and haters.

Not trying to start a conflict, but I'm looking for a specific group of potential buyers. (No I don't work for Sony marketing :P )

Thanks.

I wasnt too excited about the PSP, but its just so damn slick. If Sony does things right and releases a lot of good ports and original titles, it will rule. I'd like to get a PS1 or PS2 someday, but hopefully the PSP could just replace that. I'd love to see some PS1 ports as well. Portable Mortal Kombat Trilogy? Perhaps someone could manage to make a decent MK portable after all these years (GB,GBC, GBA, GG MKs all suck hard)

The movies do nothing for me, as I would like to someday have a portable DVD player which, well, would play the 170 movies I already own, and on a bigger screen, not to mention how cheap they've been getting

waiting on the square button issue to be resolved and the first price drop. Once it goes down to $200 I will pick it up with dynasty warriors :)

Because in a couple years, they'll come out with a folding version that has better lighting :D :D :D

-Cost; I can't justify dropping $250 on a portable unit.

-Manufacturing process; you've heard me say it over and over again about Sony's mediocre designs. If there are 'kinks' in such a new unit, I don't want to find out the hard way

-Lack of TV out: The GB Player gets the most milage out of any portable things I own. I just don't play on portable systems that much. I get a crick in my neck from looking down and a lot of squinting at screens. I know the PSP is bigger, but I'll still be squinting. :)

-Cost #2; The games are more pricey than previous handheld titles. What a pain.

I'll look at getting one eventually, but I'm in no hurry. It's not like I need _another_ system to feed. Seriously.

If DS and GBA titles become more accessable, then cool. I still want Mr. Driller. (and that blasted GCube version) :D

Hex.

Well.. I'm not just in that big a rush that's all! :)

I'm real casual about it.. but once I see a GAME that makes me HAVE to have it, I'll be all over it knowing myself.

Then it'll be parked next to my Nintendo DS and make one happy handheld family 8)

$$$

I'm not a big handheld fan as it is. I'll probably own a PSP someday, but I'll get it in a trade or late in its life on clearance or something.

I just prefer to play on my tv. And if most of the games are console ports, I'll just stick to the console.

I'm not in a hurry to get one, for all the reasons that have been quoted here. Insufficient battery life, Sony's poor track record for 1st generation products, money, and so on. Every time I look at a picture of the thing, I just keep thinking about screen scratches. And to be honest, I don't like the Playstation2 all that much, so I'm just on the fence.

Another reason I'll wait on getting one is for a somewhat more sinister reason. In 2002, I had been telling my best friend that I was considering getting a modern game console. I hadn't bought one since the Dreamcast, and I was weighing my options on which one to get. I eventually got myself a GameCube, but forgot to tell him. My birthday's a couple days before Christmas, and we met up that day to do some last minute shopping. And he hands me an Xbox! Nice! So, leading up to my birthday 2003, things at work had been going rough, I was depressed that I was turning 35, and griping a lot. We met up on my birthday again to hit the mall, and while I ran to the bathroom, he went into a GameStop and bought me a PS2! Just to shut me up about how lousy my birthday was going! Well, last year no new videogame hardware had come out (that I didn't already own), but this year, the PSP and DS have come out. I don't think he gets those huge-ass bonus checks anymore, so I'd rather not put any ideas in his head. But if he does decide to get one of the portables..... well, I'll gladly accept a PSP. As long as I don't have to pay for it. :D

The main reason i don't have one already is the price. I don't think i'm going to wait for it to drop because that could be awhile. However I will have to wait until I have $250 to spare. I'm also waiting for some more games to come out. A castlevania would be great. By the way does anyone know if square will be making any games for the system?

heck i'm still waiting for a rock bottom clearence priced Ngage...

currently i dont have much use for a portable, my GBA rarely even gets played. as much as might enjoy it on my subway ride its just not a safe idea. i can still remember getting into a fight with some thugs over my nomad on the orange line 5 years ago. i got lucky that day and got it back, with a PSP i'd be putting a mug-me target on my back. besides that we're talking what $350 to get one with a couple games, damn those better be good games!
