AlexKIDD #1 Posted March 27, 2005 I know there are already a few threads dedicated to the psp but those are mainly about the system itself and whether you are buying one or not. This one is for those of you who have already have purchased a psp to tell your opinions of the launch games or post short reviews of the games. I dont have one yet so I can't comment but i'll be gettting one soon and would like to know what's good. Right now lumines and wipeout look like the ones i'll be getting. Ferris #2 Posted March 27, 2005 Today I tried out both Wipeout and Ridge Racer. As a die-hard fan of both franchises I was happy to place my shiny Ferris Seal of Approval on both :-) All of a sudden I think I'm going to have to cut back on my Lynx a bit and make room for the PSP. +Random Terrain #3 Posted March 27, 2005 I hope someone posts their opinion as soon as they get Grand Theft Auto: http://www.gtapsp.com/index.php?page=ispspup If it's not an overhead view and people seem to like it, I will do whatever I can to get a PSP as soon as possible. A PS2 style GTA game that lets you run around in a 3D world would be very cool to have.

As a die-hard fan of both franchises I was happy to place my shiny Ferris Seal of Approval on both :-) All of a sudden I think I'm going to have to cut back on my Lynx a bit and make room for the PSP. I agree about Ridge Racer, I put a few hours into it yesterday and completed several of the tours. The game is a blast and even pays homage to all the previous Ridge Racer games. Very well done, and nicely polished as well! I also have Wipeout, but I haven't played it very much yet, but did play a few wireless games with a friend and had a blast! Oh yeah, also played some wireless Ridge Racer games, that's also very much fun! Can't wait to get some 8 player games going! ..Al
Gabriel #5 Posted March 28, 2005 Well, I feel I cherry picked the PSP's launch library. I chose: Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Acid, and Lumines. I'll say up front that none of these games are system sellers on their own. They're solid titles, but not "OMG! d00D! U got 2 git this gaem!!!" but they do make me satisfied with the system. Ridge Racer is... well it's another iteration of Ridge Racer. This one is a brand new installment, not a port of an existing RR title. It's solid. It's fun. It has lots of replay value. If you like racers, it will keep you busy. Despite some of the early hype it's getting, Lumines is not a revolutionary experience. It's a mostly standard puzzler with some cool effects. Every handheld needs a game like this. The general idea is to group like colored squares into blocks of 4. As you do this, a bar sweeps across the screen to clear your groupings. This sets a sort of timer for you to set up combos to clear massive sections of the board. Lumines also brings the "zoning" concept to the forefront. Namely, that a game is meant to be enjoyed and allow the user to lose himself in the sights and sounds and general experience of the game. When you really get into Lumines, the effect is very satisfying. Blocks clear to the music, the music responds to your actions, and the whole thing just feels relaxing and exciting and incredibly vibrant all at the same time. But, if you don't like puzzlers, you aren't going to like Lumines. Finally, there's Metal Gear Acid. I initially thought this was going to be another boring installment of the action series. Instead, it's a turn based game which uses "collectible cards" to handle actions in a tactical RPG sort of environment. I think anyone who is into Magic: The Gathering or tactical RPGs will enjoy this one. I'm glad I looked up some information on the game, because otherwise I would have missed it. What all these share in common is they are all technically PSP exclusives, not ports (though the case is stronger with Metal Gear Acid and Lumines than it is with Ridge Racer). I personally think Metal Gear Acid is the current shining star of the library. Similar gameplay could probably be found in one of the various "card" games available for the current game systems, but MGA is the only game in the PSP library really trying anything different. If I had it to do over again, I'd still buy the same three titles and skip the rest. I'm very happy with my choices.

Thats an interesting opinion. Very different than most I have seen. I would agree with most and say I would prefer a normal MG game though. Glad someone likes it. BTW, if you like "card" style games without the actual cards, look up Phantom Dust. AWESOME game and I HATE card games. It plays very much like one though. Flojomojo #7 Posted March 29, 2005 It's about the games, after all ... I got Wipeout Pure and Lumines. WP was the main impetus for my purchase, and it's worth it. Best Wipeout ever, and slick as hell in handheld form. Haven't played enough Lumines to know about that one, but it seems nice. I've got Untold Legends and Ridge Racer on my Amazon wishlist on the off chance a friend wants to buy me yet another game for my upcoming birthday. 2 games I wanted right away, with two more for later, and a movie I liked thrown in for free ... that's enough to make the system a worthwhile purchase for me, even should system support disappear tomorrow (which it won't). Jasoco #8 Posted March 29, 2005 LUMINES WILL OWN YOU! It is well worth it. Last night I got further than I'll ever be able to go. I literally doubled my previous high score and added two new skins. I also got Twisted Metal which is awesome, but I really ain't into it as much as I thought. Next I plan on getting either Ape Escape or Ridge Racer (Which I am only considering because I watched a vide ofo it in action, boy is it fast.) I'm also waiting on Mercury next month and later down the road hopefully, Puyo Puyo, Puzzle Bobble and Namco Museum.
CPUWIZ #9 Posted March 29, 2005 I also got Twisted Metal which is awesome, but I really ain't into it as much as I thought. Multiplayer.
shep #10 Posted March 29, 2005 I also got Twisted Metal which is awesome, but I really ain't into it as much as I thought. Multiplayer. I've heard that using your existing WIFI internet connection you can play this title online without any hassle...is this true? Then I'm definetley getting one when they release the stand alone handheld.

Jasoco #12 Posted March 29, 2005 Yeah, I played Twisted Metal online, but I just haven't had fun with a car battle game since the original Vigilante 8 on the N64. I got V8-2 years later and just couldn't get into it. Should have known I'd have the same problem with TM. Still, it is fun. Just wish I had gone with Ape instead. chrisbid #14 Posted March 29, 2005 the acclaim of lumines shouldnt be surprising, it was designed by the same person responsible for space channel 5 and REZ
MegaManFan #15 Posted March 29, 2005 Lumines.. is... FREAKING ADDICTIVE. Self-discipline is the only thing that's kept me from playing it non-stop since Saturday. My highest score at single player challenge is 70K+ and I've unlocked a dozen skins. The first few times you play it, it's like WTF, but then gradually your mind's eye gets over the "Tetris" hump and you actually start to visualize the colors shoving together in ways you didn't conceive of before. I've already got "techniques" - one is to wait for a 3/4ths to drop when I have a matching single square, and if you rotate the odd ball 1/4th you don't need to the upper left or right you get a perfect color square depending on which side you're on. Okay so you still have one block leftover but if that's the only block on the screen you can rack up those 1,000 point "one color" bonuses three or four times in a row. Chaining in this game is definitely your friend, because once you get a block that will clear next sweep you can really load up blocks that would otherwise be useless on either side of it and keep expanding your square plus getting a multiplier combo bonus. And here's a little incentive for those of you who get stuck at level 30 like I was for a while - when you reach 31 it slows down... WAYYYYY down. The chains you can make at that point are simply insane, with or without the random all-chain blocks. Yeah, I could write a friggin' GameFaq for it. DarkStalkers is pretty good too. Nice 2-D fighter, and it's the first time I've really been knocked on my ass by one on a handheld. Usually the graphics don't compare or the difficulty's pared down too much, but the large screen and UMD format together make this a real fighter worth multiple replays. So far, those are the only games I have, but I'm looking forward to new releases.
Jasoco #16 Posted March 29, 2005 Last night I decided to play a quick game of Lumines before bed, I ended up going as far as I ever got. Final high score was 45,102. Almost twice my previous Hi Score of 23063. I also unlocked two new skins. I don't think I could do that again if I tried. I was in the ZONE! Maybe it was my lack of sleep.. I had an almost identical experience. I picked the PSP up before bed and started playing. And I did the best I have so far. Before that game, my high score was something pathetic like 19200. But during that particular playing of the game, I hit a "zone" and got to 42588, not to mention the 3 or 4 skins I unlocked.

AlexKIDD #19 Posted March 30, 2005 Anyone see the screenshots for coded arms? It comes out in June and looks like the closest thing to a good FPS i've ever seen on a handheld. By the way I got lumines today. Now that I have the game i'll have to buy the system. I'll have some more money on saturday. I think i'll buy the system along with metal gear acid and wipeout. I think I'll wait for Sony to add a web browser to the PSP firmware, hopefully that will happen soon. ..Al
Gaztee #21 Posted March 30, 2005 Hey Guys, I got the Japanese PSP a couple of months ago when I was lucky enough to find one in Osaka  I havent been able to put Everybody's Golf (or whatever it is called in japanese!) down since. Mendon #22 Posted March 30, 2005 People seem to be really, really into the PSP and are looking for game to buy for it. For example, GTA is coming for the PSP but no one has seen screen shots of it (is it 3rd person style or top-down) Yet people on eBay have bid it up to $51.00 already HERE even though EB lists it at $49.99. Amazing. Mendon
