Apple folks who collect might be interested in this

eMates are pretty neat, they were really developed with schools in mind, but never really took off. Probably because they were pretty pricy. I'd like to pick one up one of these days.

The eMate was a lame attempt to expand the ever burdening Newton line... at first I agreed with many and was angered at Job's pulling the plug on the Newton, but looking back in retrospect, the Newton drained enormous resources and finances from Apple and while not on par; the US Robotics PalmPilot kicked its butt...

I owned a Newton for a while, they unfortunately we ahead of their time (or technology) and we just too cumbersome and slow.

I think ultimately too, Newton's handwriting recognition was klunky and not nearly accurate enough to be easy to use. USR's Grafitti was much more robust by comparison, which I think was one of the determining factors in its success. The eMate's keyboard was a good idea, but then it lost its small form factor, making it more of a mini notebook than a PDA.

Shame, too, the Newton was a great idea at the time, but like all innovations they're ultimately defeated as soon as someone else does it better.

Not that I regret it. I love my Palm. :-)
