It's not the best. It only does composite video and mono audio.

Chris Wilkson's mod does switchable composite or Y/C and dual mono (i.e. stereo) audio. Chris' mod also taps the TIA chip directly rather than relying on any points on the motherboard, and cleans up the signal on the daughtercard itself. When you tap the VCS motherboard you pick up a lot of stray interference.

Glenn -

Where can I find Chris Wilkson's video mod? What does "switchable composite or Y/C" mean? I tried Ben's hack and I'm not too pleased with the picture - I get a ghosting effect on games like Adventure and the signal to my TV isn't clear (but better than RF).

Also, does anybody know of a circuit I could use to amplify the video signal (besides running it through a VCR)?

Thanks,

Ben has already given us permission to include his mod on the site. I haven't included it yet, because I've heard some people were having problems with it, but we should probably include it anyway since it's better than what we have. Anyway, I'm still looking for the "ultimate" A/V mod guide (clear directions, nice board pics, etc, beginner terminology, etc). Surely someone who is technically inclined would be interested in doing this? Or is Chris Wilkson's info available online somewhere?

If you guys don't come up with a PAL composite solution sometime soon, I'll be coming over there with my fighting stick!!

Good question, have anyone performed a compsite hack on a PAL 2600?

Using what mod?

I have to agree with Glenn. I've tried several 2600 A/V hacks. Nothing against Ben, but his posted mod is one of the worst I've tried. I've seen Chris's mod and it works great. Since Chris is a little slow on getting this done, I suggest that you look through the Atari 2600 FAQ and use that. It is a bit of work, but works better than anything I've seen published. You can also try Jay Tilton's mod here:

ResQsoft 7800 Video Mod

It seems to work real well for me and several other folks.

I agree with Lee,

The 2600 chroma/luma mod in the FAQ is the best IMHO. The only problem I had was that when I tied chroma and luma together to make composite video, the edges seemed smeared. Think the transistors are tugging on each other.

Fixed it by only using one transistor for both chroma and luma (it became a composite only mod).

Jay Tilton's 7800 mod is pretty good also. I added a switch so only the 2600 chroma or 7800 chroma is connected at one time. This lets you crank up the 2600 color level without interference.

Ever notice that 2600 games look kind of pale on a 7800?

Has anybody tried to mod a Coleco Gemini? It would seem like the perfect system to mod.. they're fairly plentiful, don't sell for much on eBay, and the back of the case looks like it'd be easy to drill holes through. I'd really like to mod my machine to have ports at the back instead of wires coming from the machine.

Cheers,

KA

I didn't think there was much in the way of a yellow in the PAL atari pallette.

Cybergoth or Thomas, help me out here. weren't one of you chaps on about that a while ago?

Still, nice to see a PAL mod (kind of) working.

i've just bought another jr, just to experiment on (insane laughter..)

Oh my word! No wonder I couldn't make head nor tail of any of the composite mods on this (or any other page), I opened my 2600 jr (the made-in-ireland all-black model) and its layed out quite differently to anything I've seen thus far.

Does anybody have any pics of their mod that they'd like to share? I think it would be very helpful for all those trying this mod to have a general idea of what things should look like as they work...

I can post some pics of my 4-switch 2600 composite mod (using Ben's solution) if anybody is interested, but it sounds like Chris Wilkson's or ReqSoft's is the way to go....

skatepunk60 is right, it's a good composite mod. the image is perfect, there's no interference at all. but one problem is that my screen has almost no yellow. when i put the color switch to b/w i see yellow.

is this because i am using a PAL television or pal games or so ?? (i can't get it better with the potmeters)
