dalton4life #1 Posted April 12, 2005 How rare is the silver label or was this seller just full of it. It doesn't matter to me because I have been wanting the cart for a while ago and this was the 1st time it didn't go above $30 when I tried for it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=8182283749
sku_u #2 Posted April 12, 2005 The seller's full of it. There's nothing rare or different about that label. Gremlins isn't a particularly valuable game to come by for the 5200. and... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ssPageName=WDVW

I'll probably go for that one and resell the one I won. And I noticed Stratford. I'm originally from New Haven but I live in Atlanta now. There is a difference there. The original labels were foil, the later labels were made cheaper, & they look more grey than silver. Not that it makes it any more saught after, just that for some anal enough, there are more than one to look for. Even the Soccer/ Realsports Soccer & Football/Real Sports Football variants (boxes & carts) & the no name reissues like Vanguard, are not in high demand. Some stuff is harder to find in certain copyright dates to be sure. That goes for more that 5200. Look at the variations of 2600 carts. 86 picture labels anyone? Alot of 2600 games have dates from 3 or more years. I don't collect minor variations, but the type of label material is different in this case with Gremlins where some may prefer one over the other. Cool we have edit back! Edit to add a link: Skim down to Pete's post He mentions the movie/pepsi tie-in with Gremlins, that it was available prior to 1986. It most likely would have been in the foil label at that time. Now the first auction at top has such a poor picture that there's no way to see what it says. My guess though is that it's copyright 1984 on both lines. The seller is very knowledgeable in Atari. So I imagine he speaks the truth. I don't really think I am anal with my 5200 collection but I'd prefer to own the foil label version especially if it's rarer even if not "worth" more, but it's not a huge deal. I'd think the more common of the two labels would be the 1984 version since the 5200 was still in production at the time of that release whereas in 1986 the 5200 was pretty much a dead system. Besides, we all know by now that if you want something to look nice and shiny all you need is a nice coat of Armorall. video game addict #7 Posted April 13, 2005 But by most accounts it wasn't sold until '86, which would make an '84 release somewhat of a rarity! I've never fondled a foil label Gremlins myself, only read about them here on the forums. It's not that big of a deal to me either, but I think this is a variation, which could in fact be quite scarce.
sku_u #8 Posted April 13, 2005 Interesting. I have the 1984 "foil" label (checked after reading this thread). It was one of the many games my wife and I "inherited" when her Father wanted to turn her childhood room into a guest room. I know that by 1986 she was collecting and playing the NES and had pretty much forgotten about the 5200, so she would have gotten this one in 1984 or 1985. On a side note, it's kind of funny when you think about it how many people collect minor label variations for the 2600, but don't care about minor label variations when it comes to other Atari systems. I'm guilty of that myself.
Lord Thag #9 Posted April 15, 2005 I got mine from 4jays, new for about $12 as I recall. I *think* it's a foil label, but I'll have to check when i get home. Don't feel to bad if you spent a bit much. The game is REALLY fun. It kind of reminds me of spare change for the Apple II. Definately a player.

I'm closing in on completing my 5200 collection. I have less then 20 carts to go. I got this one today along with a few others and although I only had a chance to play it for about 5 mins I was plenty pleased with it.
