Thinking about buying a PC-Engine

Recommended Posts

I´m thinking about buying a PC-Engine with a handful of games and so i´ve got some questions for you:

1) do you think the PC-Engine is worth the importing-hassle (i live in germany and want a japanese version)

2) what do i need to run the jap. machine on my Pal/ NTSC TV? What kind of stepdown converter do i need?

3) any ideas on (cheap) must-have-titles for the PC-Engine (besides Bonk and R-Type)?

4) any experiences with this importer: japangamestockwww.japangamestock.com

Thanks for your help! :)

1) There isn't much 'hassle', but other than the odd shumps and the best Bomberman version the machine doesn't have much PAL SNES or MD can't offer.

2) You'll need a Mega Drive (or similar 9V 800mA PSU) to avoid buying a stepdown converter, and either a TV that will handle a NTSC signal (as most new ones do, if in doubt run a PS2 in 60Hz - if it comes out B&W then your TV won't handle NTSC) or NTSC -> PAL converter (which can be expensive).

3) Galaga '88

4) I've never dealt with them, I got my from Chan at Emugo.com (who is great) with around 5 games. I'd be interested in selling / trading it, if you'd be interested then PM me.

Just get one !! :)

Awesome system and certainly my most played, I got mine from ebay UK, its a Jap coregrafx. You might get a better deal on ebay than from an importer, shipping may be cheaper also.

I use a stepdown convertor but in the UK we're on 240v and I thought Europe was 110 like most of the uncivilised backward rest of the world ( :P ), so I dont know that youll need much more than a basic plug convertor perhaps. (But dont take this as gospel, I dont want you burning out your console because of my misinformation ;) )

Games I can recommend are splatterhouse, darius, galaga, parasol stars, bomberman, ninja spirit, rtype1 and 2, the soldier series etc etc..

DO NOT BUY chase HQ, its about the most disappointing game Ive ever bought for any system, truly awful conversion , which is a shame as i love the original. :(

Just looked at that site you linked to, if its for real they are incredibly cheap, I may have to get a duo from them, thats loads cheaper than I usually see them on ebay for. :)

Their hucard prices arent too bad either, think i may be buying some stuff from them pretty soon.

PC Engines in Japan are as common as Master Systems in Europe, so they aren't actually worth much more than the price of shipping (which is expensive in Japan). My recommendation would be (if you don't want mine) emuogo.com, who are located in Hong Kong - they've always done me good deals (and are willing to negotiate their advertised prices).
