I won a new Odyssey2 Wico trackball

Recommended Posts

I picked up a nice Wico trackball for the Odyssey2 off Ebay. I just got in it in the mail and the item looks brand new. I know this was expensive for an O2 item, but its rare and I generally like trackball games. This should kickstart my pathetic O2 collection. See auction below:

$10 doesn't sound like much at all if you plan to use it. You could probably search for years & never find one locally. So a $10 spot on a boxed accessory seems like peanuts to me.

BTW, how would you know it's for the o2 without the box? Is it visually different than there 2600 trak-balls? Maybe something where it's best to get it new like that, where if it was loose you might not even know without purchasing & trying out maybe.

And what of the adpaters to use 2600 accessories on the O2, do trak-balls work through them?

It cost $50 buy-it-now, but it is new in the box (trackball, power adaptor, manual, warranty card, etc.) It is very similar to the Atari 2600 trackball, but it has a power adaptor like the Ti-99 one (I'm not sure why?). The trackball is very rare (less than five I believe have turned up), but it seems like they were produced and sold via retail (I wish this one had a old sales slip with it to prove it). The O2 is analog I believe so this trackball is specially designed for it.

Ask PhosphorDotFossils how rare this is, and I think you'll find $50 is a bargain. Even though I don't own my own O^2, I'm still envious.

MMF,

You are right, I need to get in contact with Earl. He has a whole page dedicated to the trackball.

VGA,

I like the comments, we'll see if it was a bargain or a bust. You are right though that O2 stuff is super cheap on Ebay.

What was the opening bid? Maybe you could have played BIN killer? If no one jumped on it for three days, I would have killed it if it was cheap enough, and then take the risk of a snipe war for a little better price. But that's just me. I also regularly overpay for things I want. So maybe I would have used the BIN on that too, if it suited me. :D

WHOA! Lucky find!

You paid....well...less than I did for mine. :-o

As for the questions about plugging a 2600 trackball into a 2600-to-O2 adapter - the O2's joystick ports don't generate enough juice to power the innards (namely the optical sensors) of a trackball; a joystick is a simpler beast.

Thanks PhosphorDotFossils,

According to PDF, this is most likely the fourth one known, so it's very rare. Now I have a great centerpiece for my O2 collection. You need to check out PDF's site at www.thelogbook.com for some great 02 reviews.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the Odyssey II doesn't have any trackball-compatible games right?

None that were specifically intended for trackball, but there are some games that are damn nifty with it - I was showing off Killer Bees with the O2 trackball at OKGE last year, and everyone seemed to dig it. (That game was really meant to be the O2's answer to Centipede anyway.) Other games, like UFO and Cosmic Conflict, also work well with it. Now, straight-line maze games such as KC Munchkin or Turtles or Amok? It handicaps those savagely, sorta like playing a "drunk goggles" version of them.
