Is this pricing list considered accurate?

Recommended Posts

I don't feel that it's all overpriced. On the retail side of things you have to be a'bit crazy to pay that much for a lot of the stuff listed as there is a LOT of alternatives right now... maybe in the future it will be different.

However.... things like

Midnight Mutants (I'd buy one easy for $10 :)

Xenophobe ($7 - a'bit much but I'd pay it)

Ikari Warriors - ($5 - who wants to sell?)

Fatal Run - (I paid $25 shipped for mine)

Summer Games - ($5 - who wants to sell?)

Ms. Pac-Man ($1 - again, who wants to sell?)

Galaga - ($1 - I'm game!)

All the Activision / Absolute prices seem a bit high... feels like most games should be more in the $8-$10 range instead of the $15 - $20

Froggo games are ridiculous! *but true to eBay*

*shrugs*

You know what's funny -

A few people here who are selling games actually tried to charge me more, even though we all seem to agree that the prices on that list are slightly/ridiculously inflated.

After doing the math, I realized that almost getting gouged for a few games to the tune of $20 - $30 each LOOSE that are only a rarity 3, I've decided that collecting carts is NOT the way to go, so I'm gladly going to order a Cuttle Cart 2. After all, I just want to play the games, not display them.

I'm not much of a collector anyway, and the handful of games that won't/might not work with the CC2 I already have.

So there.

So I take it you like overpaying for not-so-rare games?

I've got a few copies of Pac-Man I could send your way for only $20 each.

If people are charging more than you want to pay then it is certainly a better choice to pass and find an alternative.

But what's up with the 'So there'? Are the sellers personally out to get you?

Personally? no.

It was more of a joke than anything. I just think the disparity in pricing for games is amusing.

Ok So I need some opinions here:

I just got my 7800 back.

So when I asked if anyone was willing to sell few not so rare games , I got a few responses.

Every time, people expected me to make an offer, instead of telling me how much they expected for their carts. Is this normal? I always thought if someone was on the up and up when selling games, they would know the value and just state it instead of playing some quasi-ebay PM bidding game. When I made an offer, EVERY TIME the person offering to sell expected more than what I offered.

Maybe I'm just cheap.

So I thought about it.

I was thinking about collecting all the carts I wanted to play, but then I did the math and figured out that getting a cuttle cart 2 is a much better idea, since I'm not looking to display my games, just to play them.

I mean really, what's the sense in spending $200 on 8 or 9 carts (at the prices I was being told to pay, that's what I'd get) if I can spend $200 on a [email protected] and be able to play 1,000+ games?

So when I told one person this, he told me I'm retarded and that I was a time waster.

Now I'm not sure how much time is actually wasted typing a PM that consists of four words "That's not enough money.", but I'm pretty sure that's not the real reason this person didn't like my response.

So am I a jerk for asking people if they had stuff for sale, and then realizing it was more than I was willing to pay, or am I just a cheap bastard?

You're not a jerk; you are a cheap bastard :D

Sounds like you were dealing with a jerk, though.

I think people are sometimes shy about putting prices on carts they're selling, since if they price stuff a little high they get a a bunch of snarky crap for it  and if they price it low they aren't making as much money as they could be, obviously.

On the other hand, the people I have inquired with have all been more than willing to price stuff in PMs to me.

Well, it is discouraging for the ones who do want to collect for both collection and gameplay sake.

Again I did pay $24.99 for Fatal Run... then looking at a ad from GamePro from Cousin Vinnies site shows they sold them new for $14.99 .. wtf?! I'm mad! ;) haha..... what's with the cheap pricing on that anyways direct from Atari?

(not so good, ok) but anyways...

All these games that was once so easy to be obtained for $1-$2 locally is now $5+ online... THEN there's the shipping charges... Ms. Pac-Man for $5? Man.... it's not even boxed.

That's what made me take a look at just ponying up the $200 for a Cuttle Cart 2.

I looked back and realized I'd spent upwards of $80 on games in the last 2 months and didn't have anything that rare.

I would have spent at least $200 by now if I bought all the carts I wanted that I have been offered, or found on ebay, and I'd have maybe 25 carts.

Christ, you can get a whole system with +/- 10 games for like $30 if you know where to look, why would I want to spend that on just one game?

The CC2 doesn't give you all the games, it just gives you a place to copy them. No seller is going to bother competing with the price of CC2+MMC storage. It would be like comparing the price of an A8 game with the price of a blank floppy disk. If having the real cartridges doesn't matter to you, then naturally the CC2 is more economical, and that would be the best way to go. :)

I think the prices for "vintage" games overall has become so inflated now because the whole "retro gaming" thing is en vogue. Look at NES prices on eBay... games which are fairly common like SMB 3, Zelda, Metroid, Metal Gear and Mega Man go for insane prices, sometimes upwards of $30 for loose incomplete copies.

I probably paid way too much for my 7800 stuff, but it's my favorite system and I figured that it has such a small library I might as well try to get a complete set (I almost did the same for the Sega 32X which has an even smaller library than the 7800, but the games were too expensive and were quite honestly not fun at all. :P)

But yes, people want way too much for some games. The only ones I need are Tank Command and Pete Rose Baseball, and I saw a copy of the latter go for something like $30 on eBay not too long ago, which is totally not worth it. I'd spring the $70+ for Tank Command, but I'm currently between jobs and can't afford to lose the $$$. :P

The highest price I paid for a 7800 game was over $65 for a complete copy of Alien Brigade, followed by ~$30 each for Planet Smashers, Fatal Run, Motor Psycho, and Double Dragon, $20 for a complete Water Ski from Atari2600.com, and $15 each for Tomcat F-14, Scrapyard Dog and Basketbrawl.

I did get lucky with some others: I got my complete copy of Mean 18 for free by accident in an eBay lot. I also got Commando, Xenophobe, Impossible Mission, Rampage, and a couple other semi-rares in lots along with a ton of commons, then I'd resell the commons and end up spending a total of roughly $10-15 on the games themselves. I also found complete copies of Dark Chambers, Midnight Mutants, and Ninja Golf for $5 (!!!) each at Philly Classic 4.

So not counting the system itself, I've probably spent upwards of $300-400 on my collection. Wow, that kind of sucks now that I think about it. :P Good thing the games are fun.
