Ahh yes the side-scrolling beat em up! Easily one of my favourite genres. I think it may be the non-stop and pointless violent action, coupled with the satisfaction of beating the crap out of hundreds of baddies.

Any player worth his joystick likes at least one beat em up - what's your favourite?

(Note that I've lumped series' together for convenience)

What, no Guardian Heroes? Not that nasty Advance Guardian Heroes stuff... I mean the real thing on the Saturn.

There are far too many of these games to create a poll for them. You'd have a ballot the size of a football field!

They are all good, but you must have lasting impact to become truely great. Like maze games there are many good games but only the name pac-man is 'Great'. I wont revale the voting for people who havent yet, but the great ones are already showing them selves.

Shoulda read the post before voting, since you stated it includes series. The original arcade Double Dragon is my clear favorie in the genre, but there are some HORRIBLE spin offs.

TMNT and Turtles in Time are both outstanding games.

Gotta go with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on this one. The original arcade game was both an excellent side-scroller and a perfect tie-in with the cartoon. Tons and tons of lunch money.. uh.. didn't end up one TMNT machine or another. Honest, Mom! :ponder:

Streets of rage 2 is truly a classic and i still enjoy playing it to this day. Shame no guardian heroes but streets of rage 2's not to shabby. :)

I picked golden axe. I played the hell out both golden axe and streets of rage on 6 pak when I was a kid. I think I enjoy golden axe a bit more though. Another good one is Battletoads/Double Dragon for nes. Great multiplayer game and better than either battletoads or double dragon by themselves in my opinion.

Great to see so many SOR2 fans. That game is definitely one of the best console beat em ups. If it's for influence I would say Double Dragon. Final Fight enjoys recognition, but when you get past that point you notice there is really not much other than bigger sprites. I am amazed no one mentioned Capcom's Dungeons & Dragons series (specifically Shadows Over Mystara).

Thsoe D&D games might be awsome but its hard to find a system to play them on. Or a game thats reasonably priced the saturn version goes for over 100 easy.

As much as I like Streets of Rage I voted for Final Fight. That's mainly because when it was a hit in the arcades no home system got it quite right and I wanted to play it at home with all the characters and 2 players so bad. I think Sega CD might have but that was after it had been around for a while. Streets of Rage 2 is possibly the true stand out in the genre. What the hell happened with Street of Rage 3????

Sega made some strange localization decisions (ie, changed blaze's clothing from red to gray :?, ramped up the difficulty) from the jap to american/european versions). IMO they couldn't top SOR2 (but it was a good effort).
