Who has a Gizmondo?

Recommended Posts

The Gizmondo is a portable machine that's available in the United Kingdom. It hasn't made it over here to America yet, so I was wondering if any of the Brits here might own one, and what your experience with it is like. After checking out http://www.gizmondo.com/ and looking over some of their games, especially Furious Phil: Dawn of The Mutants, I'm thinking that I need to investigate this machine further. I love underdog game consoles (like the N-Gage), so I'd like to hear first hand about this thing. Anyone?

I want one. I want one almost as much as I wanted the N-Gage, and more than I wanted an SP. It already has a shooter...a shooter! The shooter even has a cool weird shooter name: "Angle fish"... and it isn't about fish.

I bought the latest version of Pocket Games, the magazine for handheld gaming. They've got some info about the Gismondo, but it's pretty much the same info from the company's web site.

There's a nice couple of pages about the N-Gage in the mag, too. That's the only reason I would pay $9.99 for a magazine full of PSP propaganda.

I couldn't even get past the cover. "Game Boy: Game Over"? Yeah, that's fair, objective journalism. You can almost see Sony slipping money into the editors' bulging pockets.

I hate this. I mean basically if you want a magazine mentioning the N-Gage you have 2 choices. You can get that one magazine (which occasionaly mentions it) or you can buy one of thoe magazines about cell phones or PDAs. If you go with the latter you always get some stupid guy who doesn't understand gaming saying "The N-Gage is a great buy, but will it last in the world of handheld gaming... only time will tell." Thanks, that is exactly what you said about it last month and the month before. Why don't you either review a frigging game, look at something new they've done, or shut up about it. The last one I saw was talking about the DS, PSP and N-Gage and said "the N-Gage faces some stiff competition, but its a phone!" Way to go. That was really informative.

EGM had a page on it two months ago caled "Nokia finally N-Gaged?" but they didn't bother to mention it this month. Never mind that the release of the PSP would make for a great time to mention it, or the fact that they speant a bunch of pages talking about Splinter Cell: CT but never bothered to mention it was out for N-Gage. I mean the first ever fully 3D portable Splinter Cell comes out, with the two forms of multiplayer (versus and co-op) and they don't even mention it in a sidebar.

I love underdog consoles...I love the Virtual Boy, I owned a Game.com and liked a couple games on it, was a huge fan of the Wonderswan(s) but I just can't like the Ngage at all...though I'm slightly interested in the Gizmondo...just not the cellphone (blargh!) feature.

Do you mean you own an N-Gage and can't like it, or you can't like it enough to buy it? Just wondering, I'm not looking to jump all over your answer in a fanboy rage or anything.

I played with a Gizmondo for about 20 minutes back in September before it was going to be released. It is actually a very impressive bit of kit, looks fugly as hell but feels rather nice (I was using one of only 5 prototypes, but the guy promised it was 99% the same as a retail version will be).

Obviously it won't be a success but totally deserves to be in my book. I walked away very impressed, yet concerned by the fact that it is a 'jack of all trades' but probably not the best at any of them.

Handhelds are starting to make me nervous because I was just thinking how many times I have had to replace shitty controllers for a console... What the hell are we supposed to do if it's for an expensive handheld?

According to the Pocket Games article, the case design for the Gizmondo was by the same guy who designed the case for the Sinclair ZX81 and the Spectrum. Neither one of those are particularly pretty, either. But it's a neat little piece of trivia.

Microsoft is involved with the Gizmondo. They provided the operating system, and are developing Mechassault and Age of Empires for it. There's also the rumor that they are trying to port Halo. Talk about a system seller! Imagine the possibilities with Bluetooth networking and multiplayer!

They seem to understand the "every handheld needs a cool puzzle game" rule.

Well, there is one screen. If you click "all games A - E" and then click angelfish you get to the angel fish screen. Then, down bottom there is a picture with an arrow on the side. Click the arrow and three shots come up, one is an in game screen. It looks like a generic shooter, although there is an aweful lot going on in that screen so it might be awesome. Still, I'm a little worried about the size of your ship.

What does one of these cost, and as someone else asked, is there a US release date yet?

Well, it's supposed to be more expensive than the PSP, so I'm wondering if it will catch on. They could have pared down all the hardware in it to save money. Really, does it need Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Global Positioning? And doesn't the idea of making games available on SD cards seem really stupid, in an era where teenagers don't have any morals about pirating software?

It looks like the different packages start at £129, and go all the way up to £229 for the mega package deal. What bothers me is that it says you have to use a SIM card, like in cell phones. Since it's not a phone, what's the point? That also might be why they haven't come out in the US yet, because they have to strike a deal with a mobile phone provider to offer SIM cards for something that isn't a mobile phone. The Gizmondo is looking stranger and stranger......

Well there goes my interest. The PSP is already overpriced, and I'd certainly rather have one of those than a Gizmondo.

You ever get the feeling that shooter fans are generally getting the short end of the stick with the current generation? I want a great shooter for the gamecube. I don't want it to be in 3D and I don't want to see the back of the ship. I want to look at the ship from above and I want to have to avoid massive amounts of fire by squeezing into 1 sqaure centemetre of the screen that doesn't have something blowing up in it. Oh, and I want it to be so difficult that only one kid from Japan who was raised by a family of fighter pilots can finish it without going insane.

Anyone know of anything like that?
