2600 Roms CRC database updated

Recommended Posts

3,647 BIN files ID'd

As always, if you have a BIN not listed, feel free to upload it to:

Atari 2600 Uploads

and it will be included in the next update.

For those new to the CRC database I create, it is in plain text format and looks something like so:

CRC-32 CCITT CRC-16 size name

-----------------------------------------------

3795B948 2FA9 FAA2 4096 11_Sprite_Demo_(Piero_Cavina)_(PD).bin

Okay, guess I should have mentioned this for the noobs...

I have gotten a PM about all the missing GOOD roms, expressly the [o] ones.

While I've stated this before, its been a while...

Cowering and I do not agree on how the database should be.

This is why I make my own.

His take on it is that if a file was ever considered a 2600 rom, its to be listed.

My take, is that I have no need for proven trash data [o]=overdumped trash.

I feel if people want trash data, I can supply you with an A/D noise generator that will eliminate any free space on a drive in minutes. As such, anything from Cowerings list thats trash, will not be found in my collection.

Personaly, I've never understood the people who want "perfect GOOD sets".

Also, and noted in the CRC file are name differances.

Cowering uses certain characters in his set such as commas and exclamations which can cause many programs to crash, especially on UNIX systems.

Greg, is it possible to download the new ROMS only?

Or can you show me a list with only the new ROMS on it?

Thanks!

Appologies, but I don't keep track of specificly "new" additions.

This comes from many people uploading.

Sometime dupes show up.

Sometimes I don't update myself for months.

As such, I wait until I get about 100 new additions, clean, test, ID, sort, and repost.

Sometime the timestamps help.

You can with some ease, go to http://snailsoft.fdns.net:10080

then the server folder, and obtain the whole collection as one archive.

I'm ok and all with the decision to not catalog overdumps, but I think the whole point of doing it is so that people will KNOW that it is bad for sure and not just a different version.

So yes... having a complete GOOD collection is pointless. Just like having a GBA collection with all those stoopid video ROMS. But knowing a ROM is an overdump or is bad does have a purpose.

I think that if people have two pieces of information, they can determine whether they have a verified good dump.

Step one, is there a verified good dump out there? This can be determined by checking a list. If the answer is "yes", go to step two.

Step two, is my dump that verified good dump? This can be determined by comparing the CRC value listed with the CRC value of your dump. If the values do not match, then you have something other than a verified good dump.

Hierarchy of Roms, Desirability:

Alternate Roms (most common version first)

Hacked Roms (ordered by difficulty of hack)

Fully Translated Roms (later systems)

Functionality Hacked Roms

Audio Hacked Roms

Graphics Hacked Roms

Pirated Roms (top if no original exists)

Overdumped Roms (if no accurately sized dump exists, otherwise top)

Bad Dumps (if no accurately sized dump exists, otherwise top if it has any functionality)

Hierarchy of Roms, Historically:

Commercially Released Games from 1977-1991

Prototype Games

Released Homebrew Games

Reproductions

Pirated Games

Demos

Incomplete Games or Demos

I should also note that I have had several ROMs that Good2600 identified as PAL and turned out to be NTSC and vice versa. My way to test this was whether when the game was played on my Cuttle Cart, did the screen roll. (My NTSC TV does not do PAL at all.)

As I use a Cuttle Cart, I like to segregate my roms functionally by use (but not by controller.) That means PAL and NTSC roms will be in different subdirectories. Supercharger and Kid Vid ROMs are also kept separate.

Yeah it'd be nice if there was a decent way to prioritize the stuff so you can "filter" out the stuff of least interest. I even wrote a couple simple batch files to sort GOOD name ROMS so I would not have to worry about overdumps and the ten million hacks that I usually do not bother with.
