classic gaming nirvana

Recommended Posts

I used to be big into collecting the classics such as vectrex, 2600, NES, Sega and all the other classic game. Oneday I looked at my collection (though not excessivly huge) and realized I had everything I could ever want and I have stopped collecting since then... about a year ago. Have any of you reached "video game nirvana"?

Not really, but I've got seven PSP games already and can't think of any others to purchase. I never liked Metal Gear Solid, I have no love for sports games, and Spiderman 2 has been described as a condensed version of the console titles. The only currently available game I can see myself buying is Untold Legends, and even that doesn't interest me all that much. I've got the cream of the crop right now, and until more games are released for the PSP, I'll be satisfied with what I have.

I think I have felt like that at one point or another, but somehow I always find some niche game or accessory that (while not necessarily popular or sought after) rekindles my craving.

I've got over a hundred Dreamcast games and I reckon you only need forty to have all you need. I don't bother even looking at the DC sections of games stores now, I'm in a similar state with my Mega Drive and Master System collections.

Other than a couple of games for each console, there's no more titles that I really want for the Atari 7800, Intellivision, Jaguar, Dreamcast, and Lynx. I don't really need any more Atari 2600 games, since there's only a few genres of VCS games, all of which I already have examples of.... but I keep buying games on the few occasions when I find them in the wild.

I've only begun to develop my Genesis, Saturn, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Colecovision, CD-i, Playstation, TurboGraphix-16, or Vectrex collections. So I have plenty of stuff to look for. :D

I've reached the point where my collection at home is far nicer than anything in EBGames or Best Buy any time I visit. I'm pretty much saturated ... it would take a new generation of systems to get me purchasing again.

What's that you say? Revolution, XBOX 360, and Playstation 3 are just around the corner? No thanks, I'm full.

As in current gen games? Yes. There isn't any other fighter or racer that I need. They don't make vertical shooter games anymore, they killed all the good games to EA Sports crap and Grand Theft Auto bullshit. Besides, with the next gen Xbox being wireless controllers only, that has completely killed my little interest in the system. If I get a nextgen system, its gonna be a Revolution.

As for classic games, I have yet to begin. Got over 360 atari games, and still going, getting a genesis (I just have a nomad), sega master system, and I just started on NES, SNES and Genesis. The most games I have other than the atari is my super nes/super famicom games, and i only have like 50 of those. Plus I am getting a Qix cabinet that I am turning into a Mame machine.

I'm pretty much there save for the Jaguar which I only want Tempest, and maybe a Vectrex, but only if I find one in the wild for a reasonable price, like I did a few years ago but passed it up as I was not collecting then.

I also will buy one or two saturn games (virtua fighter kids and tempest) just cuz I have the saturn and have a whopping $14.50 invested in it.

I have about 45 2600 and 20 7800 games, plus a Dreamcast with about 8 games. I have a lot of emulation for that and have every magazine and demo disk that came out for it.

I only have about 5-6 games each for the SNES, NES, and Genny, two for the N64, and that's about It for those systems. The SNES is probably a goner as it is the most uninteresting piece of hardware that I have. I kept it for space ace and dragons lair, but was disappointed as the games were not the same as the arcade, that I was fortunate enough to be old enough to play in High school. The N64 is only for when my son visits, but this last visit, he didn't play any of the games he brought. Maybe his new DS kept him busy. He also played the hell out of Sonic in the Genny so I bought him a Radica TV-Games Genesis 2 to take home with him. It has a mini genny console, kind of cool.

I may get an Xbox for emulation someday.

Well, I've got a pretty good sized collection all things considered, but I don't know if I'll ever be satisfied. My problem is that I love bad games just as much as good ones. I guess maybe after I get all the cheap games. I don't know if I'll ever be able to stomach paying hundreds of dollars for a rare game. However, if I had the money I probably would.

my nirvana is the hunt itself, at this point its silly to even think that i'll ever give every game i have a good play thru. luckily for me thats not something i lose sleep over, for whatever reason i've gone down this path i'm enjoying it. heading out to the flea market, thrift store, yard sale makes me feel good, actually finding something for my collection makes me feel even better. my collecting goals (everything, i mean everything) and my collecting style (finds and trades only) mean that i'll never finish and that i'll never find myself paying more that a few bucks for a game.

i find that somewhere around 75% complete is where the finds start to dry up, i used to find lots of NES games i needed, til that last 25%, same for colecovision, 7800 right on down the line. when i do find a game for one of those systems its a really lucky day, now most of my finds are the 16 bit era and up. i think i might even be a little sad when i hit 75% on gen and snes, but by then i'll be well into playstation and dreamcast collecting :)
