StanJr #1 Posted February 3, 2002 I know how to play the game, but you can use either paddles or joystick. I've always used the joystick and I do pretty well. I think the joystick gives me more control. Which one do you prefer and why? AstroStan
Lemmi #2 Posted February 3, 2002 Humm you can use paddles with that game? man i never knew that Check your E-mail Stan

popeal #4 Posted February 3, 2002 hmmm... never knew you can play it with paddles, either. you really do learn something new every day! anyways, i like using the joystick for the game, and like it better than the original intellivision version - that damn disk dial deal for that game always screwed me up, especially if i hit the pad the wrong way... the joystick reigned for it! have a good one! al
Inky #5 Posted February 3, 2002 I always loved the paddles for astroblast. I was able to get pretty far in the game with 'm. I'll need to pull that old classic out and give it a few rounds again.
Rick Weis #6 Posted February 3, 2002 i think paddles are better also for this game! you can move a LOT faster for side to side..... (just my 2 1/2 cents) Take Care, Rick
Atari-Jess #7 Posted February 3, 2002 I don't.
Mountain King #8 Posted February 3, 2002 Yes, I've always used paddles, you can react much faster.
Cybergoth #9 Posted May 26, 2003 Hi there! *bumped* I played my first session of Astroblast yesterday, starting with a Joystick. I think I'll try paddles in the next session. Cool game. Weird, but cool. Greetings, Manuel
rasty #10 Posted May 26, 2003 Hi! I played my first session of Astroblast yesterday, starting with a Joystick. I think I'll try paddles in the next session. Cool game. Weird, but cool. I've found I can about double my score when using paddles compared to joystick.. the later stages are way impossible to survive with a joystick for me! Also, if you don't like the weird background color changes, you can still try my BetterBlast hack, with a black background all the time! Vic George 2K3 #11 Posted May 26, 2003 I liked playing the game with paddles. I tried playing Astroblast years ago using a trackball controller and it didn't work any better than using a joystick. Unfortunately, I can't play this on an emulator without it having to use joystick mode as its default, unless somebody knows how to get it to use paddle mode instead. Zloch #12 Posted May 26, 2003 Joystick. All these years and I never knew you could use the paddles. Sean
Rockin' Kat #13 Posted May 26, 2003 This was the first game I got for 2600..... I havn't used a joystick ever since I got a set of paddles. The paddles just allow for better responce.
Cybergoth #14 Posted May 27, 2003 Hi rasty! I've found I can about double my score when using paddles compared to joystick.. the later stages are way impossible to survive with a joystick for me! Now, what score dimensions are we talking here? During my first Joystick session, in my best game, I made some 22K points. This was ~ the stage where the mothership is introduced. So, what are your joystick/paddles scores? BTW: Is there a list of zone games somewhere? Astroblast definately is one, no discussion required I think... rasty #15 Posted May 27, 2003 Hi! I've found I can about double my score when using paddles compared to joystick.. the later stages are way impossible to survive with a joystick for me! Now, what score dimensions are we talking here? Ok that was quite some time ago (about the same time I've made the hack above), but if I'm not mistaken I've reached the 60k mark.. I think that with joystick I've hardly reacked 30k.. definitely have to try it again soon to confirm that! Gotta love shooters! Ciao, Rasty.-
Cybergoth #16 Posted May 28, 2003 Hi there! Ok that was quite some time ago (about the same time I've made the hack above), but if I'm not mistaken I've reached the 60k mark.. I think that with joystick I've hardly reacked 30k.. definitely have to try it again soon to confirm that! Ok, so I have to try harder! (and with Paddles ) Hehe, I just checked the Astroblast scores on Twingalaxies and I really wonder what made Todd Rogers stop playing at 999,595 points BTW: My current Adventures of Tron Hiscore is 52K, which'd set me on the #3 spot on TG. But I'm still getting better... Greetings, Manuel

Godzilla #22 Posted May 28, 2003 as a rule i use paddles on any game that supports them, i think paddles are one of the best controllers known to man :-) now if only someone would release a multi paddle multi button controller
Velvis #23 Posted May 28, 2003 I didnt realize the Atari had the "smarts" to detect paddles or joystick.
Godzilla #24 Posted May 28, 2003 it doesnt, its a game variation
Inky #25 Posted May 28, 2003 it doesnt, its a game variation It isn't, actually. It appears to be programmed for both. Plug the game in, turn it on, and control with the controller of choice. I've wanted to plu in a Y adapter and see what happens when you have both plugged in...
