SteveW #3 Posted April 29, 2005 Here's another question that I'd like to know about the PC Engine/TurboGraphix-16. Why was the TurboGraphix-16 so much larger than the PC Engine? When the PC Engine had debuted in Japan, I remember reading a magazine article about it, and they sat it next to an NES cartridge for size comparisons. And they said that it might come to the US, but they would have to alter the design to meet America's RF interference guidelines in electronics. But really, did the unit really have to be that much larger than the PC Engine, or was it their idea that in America, 'Bigger is Better'. It was only a few years after the Atari 5200, and maybe NEC decided to make the machine larger to look more impressive.

From what I've read it was because US gamers associate a small machine as not having alot of power, so they made it bigger in apperence. In Japan they are very pressed for space, so the smaller the system the better (which is probably why it was originally made so small). Tempest
sega saturn x #6 Posted April 29, 2005 (edited) Same reason nes games are so tiny in japan. Most of those space waisting case is empty. Thats why i always like the genesis the carts were so tiny (compared tot other systems on the market). Snes carts are pretty empty i know this because i stomped one in stupid M. bison. AlexKIDD #7 Posted April 30, 2005 www.turbografx-16.com is a nice site with a lot of information and I believe it is run by a member of this forum. If you are looking for turbo reviews www.videogamecritic.net has a good amount of them.

jesusc #9 Posted April 30, 2005 i've never taken one aprt to verify, but I have heard multiple times that it was do to the extra rf shielding NEC had to add in order to make it FCC compliant.
