Crystal Castles question...

Recommended Posts

Are there "warps" in the 2600 version as in its arcade counterpart?

Such as:

Jump at the upper left hand corner of Get the Gems Bentley Bear on Level 1 to warp to Level 3

Wear the magic hat and jump at the bottom of the Hidden Ramp on Level 3 to warp to Level 5

Jump at the upper left hand corner of Crossroads on Level 5 to warp to Level 7

Thanks in advance,

Rick Vendl II

No, the warps are not there. I remember that being a huge let down for me back in the day when I bought it; I loved using the warps in the arcade.

As did I.. but how do you know for sure there are none in the 2600 version?

I've put lots of hours into the game since I bought it when I was a kid.. but who knows, maybe there are some in there we've just been never able to find :D (although yeah, I do severly doubt it) :P

You know this sounds like another homebrew waiting to be made. If that ever gets made, I won't have to go through the two tree waves.

1) The first warp, on the first level, where you run round behind the structure and jump, is impossible because there's no path to get behind the structure in the 2600 version.

2) The second warp, on the level with the two tiers separated by a gully, where you get the hat, ride up the right-hand elevator, head into the gully and jump in the middle, doesn't work on the 2600 version.

It's reasonable to assume from just the fact that these two warps aren't there, that none of the rest of them are, either. Let's face it; Crystal Castles was an ambitious project for the 2600 to begin with. Like Activision with Rampage, Atari had to cut a lot of corners to make it work -- and even then it didn't really work.

Yeah but your mistake is assuming that it would be the same as the arcade version. ;)

The first level one is of course super obvious to everyone who knows the arcade warp.. but who's to say there isn't a warp on the 2nd level somewhere? Or heck, the third.

Again, let me reiterate, I am 99% sure there are NO warps in the 2600 version. :) But I would be glad to be proven wrong is all I'm saying :D

Sort of.

Often when I would fry this game, Bentley Bear would actually be outside of the castle, where he could go off screen. I'm pulling this from distant memory, but I recall that if I went off screen and jumped at just the right place, the castle would finish and I would be whisked to what looked like the second castle of the first level, except that the characters all acted like it was past level 9 (the Wizard's hat jumped around, and turned into an enemy ball if it wasn't grabbed in time). Bentley also had an infinite number of lives, at least until the score reached 20,000.

Officially, no. I'm willing to bet real money the Atari 2600 version lacks the warps, though Atari did put them in all (or most) of their ports for other systems.

I disagree. Crystal Castles on the 2600 is spectacular, in my humble opinion. Of course, I've said that several times already. :)

Say, as long as we're bringing back the "Edit" button, would it be possible to get a "Delete" button as well, for those times we accidentally hit "Reply" instead of "Edit"? :)

Well, I didn't say it wasn't technically good -- it does lack some of the more entertaining gameplay elements of the arcade due simply to the machine's limitations, but it was a good effort as I said. The biggest drawback is, like Centipede, Missile Command and the like, that the joystick is a poor substitute for a real track ball. The CX22/CX80 does give you much more of that arcade feel and better responsiveness -- I found I actually liked the game once I played it with a trak ball -- but you're still limited to moving at the same pace no matter how fast you roll the ball.

Sort of - hit GAME SELECT to warp from levels 1 to 8
