StanJr #1 Posted May 10, 2005 when it comes to new games. I got Xenophobe and Alien on Saturday, and popped them in, played them, without any knowledge of how to play or what to do, and racked up big scores (109K in Xeno and 50K in Alien) no problem. Then I get on here and read the manuals, all about flamethrowers and grenades and picking up hardware and stuff, and now I can't even get scores half as good as those when I had NO IDEA what I was doing! Oh, and does the flamethrower in Alien actually DO anything? Its yet to work reliably for me in getting those Aliens to run away. Ignorance must be bliss with new games.....sigh. rareltd #3 Posted May 13, 2005 Well, I never read any of the old Atari manuals for my 2600. I read them after, slap my forehead, and say, "So THAT'S what that's for!"..heh...it's more fun to discover as you go. Like Phoenix for the 2600 for another example. Pulling down on the joystick activated your shield. Hrm, I thought as I played through the first time. I accidentaly pulled down on the stick and was pleasantly surprised! Trade-N-Games #4 Posted May 13, 2005 Games have manuals? Wow you learn something new everyday. I guess I should not read a manual for kaboom I might start to suck.
Lord Helmet #5 Posted May 13, 2005 When I was in elementary school, I would take my game manuals to school and read them there just so I could do something video game related. Either that or I would draw game screens
King_Salamon #6 Posted May 14, 2005 Reading manuals on family trips was the way to go.. that and Electronic Games magazine of course! My favorite manuals were the Coleco ones... what made them great was that they always put a paragraph near the end which was titled: The Fun of Discovery That to me was the reason to play games then... fart around with a game and if you HAVE to read the manual well there's alway another game of Asteroids or Space Invaders... I'll read that manual some other time. Today... it's great to actually read and enjoy the manuals. I hated the DC Atari Force Comic.. I didn't think it was cool as the story had nothing to do with the games. Perhaps I would get a better enjoyment from the comic now as I can enjoy a good story. Anybody suggest the comics as a good cheap read? (I should be able to find a run of these rather cheap)
