shank #1 Posted May 10, 2005 What a fun game! Just curious, which do you like better, arcade asteroids or 2600 version of asteroids? For me, i'll say the 2600 version is better because there seems to be more muscle in the gameplay and it's more fun.
cvga #2 Posted May 10, 2005 I always liked the 2600 version better as a kid. My quarter never seemed to last very long in the arcade version
atarilovesyou #3 Posted May 10, 2005 ...you guys are nuts!...I remember having the hardest time playing Asteroids as kid on the Atari...I couldn't quite figure out the whole thrusting thing...back then, it was so new to me, I couldn't understand why the ship wouldn't go where I was moving the joystick to, ala Chopper Command! Ha! But really, the arcade version is sooo much better. Better sound, vector graphics....my all time favorite, come to think of it. I can't even really say I like to play the 2600 version nowadays, really. I stick to the Atari Anthology version of the arcade....and Major Havoc!... Spud #4 Posted May 10, 2005 I have to vote fot the arcade version, I spent way too many quarters at the local c-store that had it. The crisp vector graphics, the 5 buttons, the ear splitting sound of the small ship. I did spent 40.00 for a new 2600 copy when it came out but still even to this day when I see a machine, (usually one of those machines at Dave and Busters that had like 40 classics to choose from on it) I play it. Feralstorm #5 Posted May 10, 2005 I liked the 2600 version back when, but gotta go with the arcade version, since rocks can move at any angle there.
moycon #6 Posted May 10, 2005 Atari Asteroids with all the variations was a good game, but the Asteroids themselves always reminded me of floating blobs of cotton candy or something. The arcade graphics are definately cooler (I have a thing for vector) but I suck at the arcade version.

Lord Helmet #8 Posted May 10, 2005 I like both the arcade and the 2600 version. the arcade version is better, but I really suck at it. I can play VCS Asteroids forever.
+kisrael #9 Posted May 10, 2005 For the Atari version as a kid I found it very satisfying to put it on "shields" option and just camp out in the center...you could stay there all day!

A big deal in my neighborhood when I was growing up was to select one of the levels where your ship had shields and see who could roll over the score the most. On levels where you get a spare ship every 5,000 AND you have shields, you can play until the cows come home.
Lord Helmet #11 Posted May 10, 2005 For the Atari version as a kid I found it very satisfying to put it on "shields" option and just camp out in the center...you could stay there all day! 852769 I always thought the shields on the 2600 were kind of silly, since they didn't work like shields, they just let rocks pass through you... Now a cool hack of Asteroids would be to make it more like Asteroids Deluxe, complete with real shields and the Killer Sattelites that come out near the end of the level. That would be SWEET! I'm surprised that it hasn't been attemted. If it has, I'm not aware of it.
Spud #12 Posted May 10, 2005 I remember back in school in computer class we wanted to make a version called Hemorrhoids. The ship was a tube of Preparation H, and of course the rocks were flying asses that you had to shoot.

I have it on my Kroc Multicart. I renamed it Kickasteroids. (Yeah lame I know, but it fits!)
sandmountainslim #14 Posted May 10, 2005 The 2600 version is "passable" I suppose, has anyone made a vector hack of Asteroids?

sku_u #21 Posted May 11, 2005 When I first got Asteroids back in the early 80s, I thought it was one of the most boring games out there and a terrible port. I could literally sit in the middle all day and flip the score endlessly. That is until I read the instructions (What do you want from me, I was only 7 or 8. How many kids that age pay attention to instructions?) and flipped the VCS over to difficulty A. From then on it was gaming at it's best! I love the vector hack of Asteroids for the VCS, but nothing compares to the arcade version as long as you don't use the invincibility cheat that is. I can play that until I get tired of it. -S 853296 You play on the 'fast' asteroids and turn on the UFO's right? Just checking Otherwise if you do and it's still easy... try Thomas' hack! It ups the Asteroids action to a new level on the VCS. I'm glad there's a local pub near where I work that has an original Asteroids (at Shorty's in downtown Seattle) so I go there during lunch sometimes to play it. One thing you notice when you play an original cab these days is there's no way any emulation can match the display of a real vector monitor. And in Asteroids you can just see it in the shots! The white hot glow of them and the tracers they leave behind.. aahhh only a vector monitor can make a single pixel so bright That being said, Asteroids was always a game I sucked at To this day I still have a hard time breaking 10,000 to get an extra man. I have no idea how those guys could flip the score by hunting the small UFO's. I'm good at lots of games. I suck at Asteroids. I don't have Asteroids, but my dad does. He can't even sit on the toilet some days. :Þ 853275 Thank you, Cousin Eddie's kid. 853294 Yes. That was the joke. yes.
NE146 #23 Posted May 11, 2005 and flipped the VCS over to difficulty A. And not only that.. in a regular Asteroids cart it is IMPERITAVE to play the EVEN numbered variations (i.e. game 2,4,6,8, etc...the "fast" asteroids). Because as I'm sure most of us know, it really is one of the major differences in the gameplay of the 2600 version. Otherwise the rocks just travel straight up and down on either side of you and barely drift your way!.... which is bullshit. 'Course Thomas' hack fixes that up even more. I love it when you get all sorts of asteroids zooming left and right and whatnot. You just don't see that in the odd number variations. I dunno how many times back in the day when I'd see people playing the display version and playing the odd number variation. I wanted to go there and hit the select button right in the middle of their game
Nukey Shay #24 Posted May 11, 2005 That's so awesome... that's going on my Krocodile Cart tonight. 853284 Um...I don't think you can. Unless there's something I missed, Starpath isn't supported by KC... So what is the difference between it and the krok? who plays more games? I think the cuttle cart plays more games. Differences are: * KC is a multicart CC is not * KC will be available CC is no more (or are you selling yours ?) * KC downloads games much faster * KC plays 3F games up to 512K CC up to (damn i don't know but less than 512K) * KC plays EF , CC does not (=> Homestar RPG) * CC plays E0,E7,FE and Starpath KC does not (and maybe another bs mode I forgot) They are just a bit different :-) Kroko. 723798 Of course, it should be playable with an actual Supercharger.
