Favorite Playstation games?

Recommended Posts

What are your favorite Playstation games? I'm talking the original Playstation. It's probably my favorite system to own right now, given that the games are in such abundance everywhere, and rarely climb above $20. It seems like you can't go to a used game store without seeing about 300 PS games lining the wall.

And that's what I like to see. Lots and lots of games lining walls.

My personal favorites are:

Spyro: Year of the Dragon

Chrono Cross

Anything Mega Man

Chrono Trigger ( I never played it on SNES... never got a chance to find one. Besides, I love the FMV's they threw in, in fact one of the scenes is my wallpaper on my cell phone, and all my ringers are different themes of CT.)

Lunar Silver Star Story

Street Fighter Alpha 3

Tekken 3

Strikers 1945

Einhander

DDR 5th Mix

That's the ones that pop in my head right now.

Skullmonkeys

SUCH a badass game...

There are soooo many! And they're all relatively easy to find, and cheap. As much as I wanted to prefer the Saturn back in the day, there are simply too many good PSone games out there.

Wipeout XL

Colony Wars

Jet Moto 2 custom edition (with hidden tracks from the first one)

Tempest X

Ridge Racer (the first one!)

Tekken 3

Atari Anniversary Redux

Namco Museum 1/2/3 - especially the "rare" #2 with Mappy and Xevious

Doom

Soul Blade

that's 10 ... a reasonable start for anyone!

So...judging from your 'Best Of Nintendo' lists, you like puzzles, racers, flying games, and classic games. So would you say that there aren't a lot of good games in those categories for PS?

Die Hard Triolgy (mainly just the Taxi driving game part of the game but the action and gun games are decent)

Final Fantasy VII

Castlevania SoTH

Resident Evil (all games with 2 being the best)

Metal Gear Solid

Devil Dice

Ridge Racer 1 (1st game that let you play you own tunes!)

Xevious 3D (c'mon look at my avatar plus the game just rocks)

Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi (not the greatest fighting game but it's good and it's Star Wars)

Crash Bandicoot Warped

1. The raiden project : My 2nd favorite shooter next to Ikaruga. Only good if you

like 1942 style shooters though. Has both R1 And R2.

2. Intelligent Qube: My current favorite. A very smart and unique puzzler.

And addicting. Great music score as well.

3. Tekken 3: 1 and 2 are good as well. But three has the most polish.

4. Wipeout Xl : Another case where all three versions are great, 2 just is my

fave.

5. Risk: Best conversion of the board game. Much better than the stinky

PS2 version.

6. R type 4 All 4 are great though. Ridge racer, RR revolution, and Rage

racer. Great racing series. Unless you are into forza/Gt type.

7.Doom. It's doom! No more need be said...Except that the ps version

does away with the disco MIDI tracks, and puts some great

ambient style sound in. Definite improvement.

8.Fox Hunt Just kidding.

Speaking of flying games...

<steps onto soapbox>

I, for one, would like to take this opportunity to complain that there aren't enough (any?) flight simulators for modern consoles. I had really hoped to start seeing some when the PlayStation came out but nooooo. Here we finally have hardware (and enough controller buttons) to do a realistic (or even semi-realistic) flight sim. I'm not talking Ace Combat or Star Wars Rogue Squadron action-style games. I'm thinking more in terms of the flight sims you'd find on the Mac/PC: Red Baron, A-10 Attack!/Cuba, F-18 Hornet, etc. We got realistic driving sims, why no flight?

</soapbox crumbles underneath after eating too many bean burritos>

Oh, and here are my favorite PS1 games...

Atari Anniversary Edition Redux

Castlevania - SoTN (chalk up another fan)

Chrono Cross

Gran Turismo

Metal Gear Solid

Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

Here are some good ones:

Lunar 1 & 2

Arc the lad collection is good if you have many many hours free

Alundra (not alundra 2)

Silhouette Mirage

Symphony of the Night

How'd I forget Alundra?

I can also recommend Lunar: Eternal Blue.

But Silver Star Story just makes me sad. They completely changed the theme of the game, as well as jabbing very large holes in the series' story.

It's a darn shame, too, since the original didn't age well at all. It oculd use a remake pretty bad, but I really dislike the one it got.

I'm kind of surprised that someone (two people, I think) mentioned Oddworld. I got that game last year for PS and I thought it was pretty hilarious. I played it for a while and then got stuck, and I haven't played it since. I thought it was a really cool idea, since the thinking man's puzzle game genre has kind of gone out of vogue. I didn't know anybody besides me had ever heard of it.

On a related side note, want to make $25 playing Oddworld?

Playstation bounties!

And I forgot Crash Bandicoot! Of course, it's basically the same game as Spyro, although instead of the cute purple dragon you're a fox (or something).

My list:

  • Croc - It's little more than a Sonic rip-off, but hey, it's got great tunes and challenging levels, and I kind of like the little guy.
  • Ridge Racer - It's got the speed, it's got the tunes, and thankfully the narrator is only annoying about half the time. Even with Burnout 3 and Gran Turismo 4 in my library, I still have to pop this one in now and again.
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy - Also known as Mortal Kombat 3: We Got It Right This Time, Trust Us!. Well, no they didn't, but this came the closest, and it's still a good fighter in its own right.
  • Namco Museum, Vol. 1-5 - These collections continue to be shining examples of how to do emulation right. Newer collections may offer cute graphical tweaks and (arguably) better emulation, but nothing comes close to the raw control this series offers (except MAME, of course). The ability to play games like Pac-Man and Dig-Dug on a vertical monitor is a definite plus.

There are other good PlayStation games, and there are other games I like that also have PlayStation ports, but these are the ones that make me happy I own a PlayStation.

Popular consensus is that we console players are too stupid for such games. Or that they don't sell. I like the Starfighter games, Crimson Skies, and Secret Weapons over Normandy well enough (still need to play Yager :ponder: ), but what I really want is X-Wing or Tie Fighter on these machines. Alas, it doesn't look like it's ever going to happen with the scripted stuff we get now.
