Clint Thompson #2 Posted May 13, 2005 (edited) FUG! Just when I though I had no reason to buy an XBOX.... That's pretty damn cool actually! Holy crap it's awesome looking! Along with Beautiful and Stunning looking! This is what I expect from Minter.... and puts a tear in my eye about Unity.... I can agree with his statement about this work too! Looks like I'm getting an xbox.... sh!t! So in a weird way.... this will be a 10 year anniversary to the Jaguar CD VLM (as it was done 10 years ago from this one yes?) Awesome... look how far VLM has came baby! Jeff Minter Rocks! Edited May 13, 2005 by Clint Thompson
Starcat #3 Posted May 13, 2005 Hi folks! What Jeff Minter does VLM for the XBox 360 ??? And I thought this friday 13th would pass without anything bad happening. I guess it's good for Jeff and these days that work is often a problem, I'm glad for him that he has work to do. Although I hoped and still hope that Jeff Minter will at some point work on games for the coming nintendo systems again. However even though I would love to have his latest creation, there is no way in hell I'm buying XBox 360. Sorry folks. I didn't buy a Xbox and do not plan to do so either. Not only that I don't like the system at all (bad quality control, no real reason to own it if you have a PC or PS2 already, horrible controllers etc), but also I don't think Micro$oft and their ideas about todays gaming are something that should be supported. The only way I would ever get an Xbox or Xbox 360 was if I got one for free. Let your voice be for the Revolution (Nintendo). Mine surely is. Regards, Lars. Beer Monkey #4 Posted May 13, 2005 Fun, not spite, drives my buying decisions. Bring on the 360, looks like a fantastic system.
Clint Thompson #5 Posted May 13, 2005 Yea... I can't believe myself sayin I look forward to a M$ product... but I seriously doubt the work of Minter will be within Sony or Nintendo in the future.... so I'll just have to go with the 360...

Would that make it a 3D psychedelic scene?
Clint Thompson #7 Posted May 14, 2005 I just got to see part of the video and it's definately tripped out! I love the 2nd one in the video (for some reason it reminds me of the of the object from 2001/2010 only clear ) Hopefully it'll allow for future visual add-ons/upgrades (I know it comes with 50) but I'm sure it would support updating. SteveW #8 Posted May 14, 2005 I was wondering how Jeff managed to create an entirely new VLM in such a short amount of time. Then it occured to me..... he's been working with the GameCube's development system for some time. The GameCube has a PowerPC processor in it, and he's been coding Unity to it for some time. I guess that would make it would be easy to port his trippy visuals to the Xbox 360's G5 processors.
Mindfield #9 Posted May 14, 2005 Bugger but his server's slow. Still, what's downloaded of the vid so far looks sweet, and just what I'd expect from Ye Olde Yak. Trippy, funky, colourful, the natural evolution of Psychedelia/Colorspace/VLM. Coolness! I'm glad Jeff's work is being appreciated by the powers that be. He deserves it. SteveW #10 Posted May 14, 2005 Yeah, that's one thing that really annoyed me, his server is painfully slow. I started the download after I got off work, I ended up nodding off for an hour, and the large version of the movie I was downloading looked to be only 15%. So I gave up on it. I tried downloading the small version, and it took hours.
Paolo #11 Posted May 14, 2005 I second Starcat's word, ONE BY ONE! (... except for the Nintendo part, sorry ) Fact is that, even if Lars is a young man, he probably knows about M$ history, and what they have done to the computing and gaming community. So, there is no hatred for M$ 'just for the fun of it', but for a lot of good reasons. I don't mean that I wanted VLM for Jaggers only (although it would have been nice ), but a better system from a better brand was the way to go... And if we consider that ATARI was the only company BORN to make videogames, maybe just SEGA could have been a good target, or Nintendo, as Lars says. Mindfield #12 Posted May 15, 2005 Finally saw the whole thing. Very sweet indeed. I'd love to see more of the effects in action, but the ones shown were incredibly cool. Definitely an evolution of audio visualization and good on Yak for pulling it off yet again. Unfortunately it probably won't be enough to get me to buy an XBox 360. I've nothing against the console, I'm really just not into modern consoles. I have a moderately higher end PC and I've only deemed a small handful of games worth buying for it. Plus, I prefer the keyboard+mouse combo over joypads. More control at one's fingertips.

I would think with all the games the 360 is aiming for that a keyboard/mouse setup would almost be needed.... at least I would like it more...
Mindfield #14 Posted May 15, 2005 I'd love it -- I got so used to keyboard/mouse that I find it constricting to use anything else. Given that the 360 will probably be best suited for 3D, the analog control and precision of a mouse coupled with the instant responsiveness and easy access of a keyboard would be requisite for FPS-type games. My biggest grip with joypads is that strafing is just too damn difficult -- you either have to use a button combo or assign the function to shoulder buttons, which then throws one a bit off-balance to pull off more complex moves that involve strafing. Granted, there will also be plenty of games best suited for a joypad -- any game where analog control works best, like racing or sports games, for example, but a keyboard/mouse would be an ideal companion. atarifan49 #15 Posted May 18, 2005 It was cool to hear Jeff Minter mentioned briefly on G4 TV's coverage of E3. Their group of standard G4 cast were talking about Xbox 360 and Microsoft's concept of marketing this to the hardcore gamer and not-so-hardcore gamer. Anyway, Kevin Pereira makes a brief mention of Jeff Minter's name and his assoication with the XBox 360. Unfortunately the rest of his bunch ignored him. Have to give Kevin P. a big "Way to Go!"
