Sully70 #1 Posted May 14, 2005 While I will always view the 5200 version of Centipede as the ideal version to own, I've gotten hooked on the Colecovision version lately. It's like Centipede on cocaine. Just more frantic than any other version I've played. The graphics are a little more cartoonish, and the spider likes to hang out at the bottom and wait for you to run into him or go over him instead of jumping around alot. Maybe I just haven't played the 7800 or 5200 versions in a while, but the Colecovision version seems like a much faster paced game. Even so, the definitive version of Centipede(and Defender for that matter), will always be on the 5200.

It starts off much harder than the arcade. There are no true difficulty settings. The difference between the different levels is just the number of lives. It's just as fast and hard on all settings. I think it's an excellent looking and sounding conversion but I wish they had kept the same aspect ratio as the arcade ala CV Mr. Do's Castle.
Blur2040 #3 Posted May 15, 2005 I've waited for a long time for somebody to bring up Colecovision Centipede (I have a fear of creating new topics). In my mind, it blows away all other versions I've played. It's just so fast, and so fun. You're right though, the spider can be a real pain. 99% of all my deaths are caused by me thinking I can go under the spider and shoot him...then I die. I have to ask...What do you play it with? For the longest time, I was using a Super Action controller...(because the standard ones suck anyway) and I was doing quite well...then...I tried a Master System controller (though I don't have a splitter and controller switching is dicey) and that was really good too. Vic George 2K3 #4 Posted May 15, 2005 I'm probably glad I missed getting Centipede for the CV. I don't like how big my bug blaster is in comparison to other versions -- you can no longer avoid the 'pedes when they're at least one row away from the bottom. I also don't like how the spider moves around, most of the time hugging the bottom of the screen.

I've gotten used to it and it has a good arcade feel to it.
chuckwalla #6 Posted May 16, 2005 I love CV Centipede using the Roller Controller - the large screen display, quick gameplay, and smooth rolling action make it an excellent version to play. I also like the 7800 Centipede using the standard Atari joystick. It's nice to have a choice of some excellent translations of such a great classic. ScottHuggins #7 Posted May 16, 2005 Yeah, CV Centipede is incredible. I have the roller controller...and I also have to trackball controller for the atari 5200...the CV version is the best. For those who don't have it: get it. Live it. It rox. PS: Galaxian for CV is the best ever also....IMHO, more fun and more playable than the original arcade. Gawd, the CV is such an awesome system. Lord Helmet #8 Posted May 16, 2005 (edited) Dumb question, but does the CV see the roller controller as analog, or does it work like the trak ball on the 2600 in digital mode? I don't have a roller controller, but I have been thinking about getting one. Edited May 16, 2005 by Lord Helmet
joeybastard #9 Posted May 16, 2005 CV Centipede is good but since the Roller doesn't work as a true trakball I play the 5200 version more often. If the trackball worked right, I'd probably prefer the CV version. It's one of the only games I prefer on the 5200, the other being Pitfall II. I like Slither a lot too. The ability to fire both top and bottom makes this one get pretty frantic at higher levels. I also really like the desert setting of Slither.
