How do you store your 5200 controllers (cords)?

Recommended Posts

I ask this because I took out my trackball and I had to really straighten out the cord before it would work correctly. I know not to tightly wind these cords because the 5200 cords seem susceptible to not working afterward if you do so; however, I also don't have the room to leave all my controllers with their cords totally undone and straight. I wuld hate to break the cords for the 5200 trackball, Starcon and Questar. I have these cords loosely wrapped, but is this OK? What does it mean when you have to straighten the cord to get the controller to properly function? Any solutions?

Thanks!

If any of these cords work in one position but not in another, then that would indicate something is broken within the cord. Having a cord wound in a spiral would introduce a small amount of inductance, but not enough to affect the fairly low speed signals the 5200 uses.

I don't store my controllers in the unit, since wrapping the cords tightly isn'y good for them (plus it's a real pain to do anyway).

The Questar is a Colecovision arcade type controller. It is rare like the 5200 Starcon.

I figured something might be broken in the cord, but when I straightened it out it worked fine. Are you sure that having the cords wrapped up when playing vs. having them loose won't affect the gameplay?

Thanks for the replies!

Well, it really shouldn't matter (but I've seen stranger things)... but experiment with moving the cable around and see if you can make it come & go.

Its broken I'm afraid. That's the sign, if you're able to move the cord around and affect its ability to work, there's a short somewhere.

Usually it's an open circuit, meaning a wire is broken within its insulation. A short would mean 2 wires are exposed and touching, which is far less common.

Yep, its a broken wire. I try to store the cables loose to avoid that. There is no easy way to find the break point. And if you have ever opened up a 5200 cable, it would be a pain to fix.

Ack! :-o

I think I'd rather leave the cables straight myself. Of course when it was shipped to me it was wound tightly and stored in the little compartment. It remains to be seen whether either of these controllers got broke.

Just don't want to abuse my baby... *croon*
