Atari XEGM

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Is the XEGM at all rare? I purchased one off eBay, barely used, but complete in a box with all the original bags, wires, wrapping, and manuals.

Can these basically play ALL of the 800/1200 etc, cartridges?

I don't ever plan to sell it... but i was just curious what the desireability of these would be. I'm not sure why I care, I guess it's just nice to know if you've got something that's rare... :)

Thanks!!!

I think it's a bit more rare than the standard 800XL/65-130XE's, but it's not that rare as far as I know.

The simple answer to your question is YES! It will play all the cartridges for the 800/XL/XE line except for the same few 800 cartridges tha won't work with any XL/XE, like, IIRC, Gorf and Wizard of War to name two of them(?) If you visit B&C Computervisions (link here at AA in LINKS section under "dealers") and/or Video61&Best Electronics they generally have lists of cartridges that tell the ones that are for only the 400/800 or that will only work with 64k or more (in case all you have is a 16k 400/600XL or 48k 800). But all the new XE cartridge games were made with the XEGM specifically in mind, but also work with XL/XE's due to compatiblity. Some of them will even work with the 400/800, but not all. You're set for 99.9% of the cartridge games.

I believe you made a mistake - I remember playing an original Wizard of Wor cart on my PAL 65XE, with no problems at all.

I probably di, I was just trying to remember a couple 800 only games off the top of my head and those were the two I came up with, maybe both are not the right "800 only" games...but whatever, as I said, the dealers that sell the cartridges generally have notes as to what systems games will or will not work on.

Here is a sample list from Video61, they have Gorf, Slime and Demon Attack listed as 800 only carts, but they seem to offer a pass-through "translator cart" to make them work on XL\XE's anyway if you REALLY need these games...there may be other 800 only games as this is definately NOT a definative 8-bit cart list, but they do carry some unique cartridges not available from anywhere else...the % means 800 only or needs a translator cart, the + means it requires a lightgun and the * means it needs paddle controllers, as for memory required, that's listed too, htough some of those 64k carts *may* still work on a 48k 800 anyway, I'm not sure if that's memory required or memory of the cart itself.

I don't think the XEGS is rare at all. They pop up for sale about as often as 800s or 130XEs or 65XEs or any Atari 8bit.

The XEGS w. separate keyboard is unique though. Was there ever a C64 variant w. a separate keyboard? The separate keyboard was a remarkable departure aesthetically. However the keyboard had a short cable and was not of high quality construction. The XEs in general weren't of high quality construction. I think the Atari 800 will always rule in this regard. The 800 was a device of great quality with a nice keyboard.

Oh, that's interesting. I just assumed they were all like that.

Mine has a seperate keyboard too. It's like light grey, with a bunch of girly pastel colored buttons. It has a pair of "proline" controllers, and a gun too..

864051[/snapback]

Ah, I don't mean that the XEGS w. detachable keyboard is unusual or rare, I just meant that the detachable kb sets it apart from all the other 8bits.

AFAIK, about half of XEGSs have keyboards.

They ALL were relesed with keyboards, if you've seen them without, they have been removed or lost.

You can thank 1980's American pop culture for the "girly pastel colors" I always thought they sucked too. It was fine to have pastel colors on T-shirts and sunglasses, and even as an art style on consumer product boxes, but Atari did go too far with trying to be "hip" when they gave the XEGS pastel buttons. Like they really thought those colors weren't a passing fad?!? I just thank God they didn't use colors like that on other XE&ST computers! YUCK! They would have gone out of business about 5-10 years sooner if they had. Though I guess one could always paint the buttons grey or beige like the keyboards and the rest of the Atari procucts, but that color scheme will probably come back into fashion again sooner or later (after all the 80's wasn't the first time; 1950's was also big on pastel colors in amercian pop culture) then the XEGM's will be all the rage with classic collectors. So if the cycle continues, it should be about 5-10 years and pastels will be all the rage once again.

Yes, all Atari computers were made much more cheaply after the Tramiels took over in 84/85 and Atari, Inc. became Atari Corp. The 800 and XL lines are all much more sturdy, especially in their keybaords. But it's what's inside that really counts, and that's what I love about Atari computers, not necessarily the cases and keyboards, though I do wish the keyboards had been as good as the XL's...

but everybody must agree: the c64 gs is truely ugly :) ... compared to our handsome xegs this device looks like a sallow monster.

Slight prob. with some entries on your list, Zybex and Arkanoid (Zeppelin and Oceon/Imagine prespectively) never offivcially existed as cartridges nor was there a cart version planned, only ever existed as tape versions

Thunderfox, even the cart version was 64k (Adapted from the tape version, and also used bank switching, as it hard loaded data into high mem)

World championship karate (epyx licenced from system 3) if we are talking about the same programme, originally released as international karate (system 3), only ever existed as tape or disk (no cart version was ever done)

Twilight World (Atari) and Trailblazer (some UK software house), never released on cart only on tape

Smush (Polish game) never released on cart...disk only

The S A G A. series.. agian disk only (never cart)

Mr Robot (Never Cart) disk/tape only... can't qiute see why it's 64k

Diamond Mine (English s/w) and Flash Gordon (Mastertronic/M.A.D) again tape only, never cart

Bubble trouble (uk budget software publ.) Desmonds Dungeon (Creative sparks), Dan strikes back (Englsih s/w) again never Cart, only tape (possibly disk also regarding dan strikes back)

Sorry to nitpick, just stating the obvious, i.e homebrewed or re-engineered versions

Video 61 made lots of "unofficial" carts.

Lance has received permission, though, to legally sell cartridge versions of some games originally released in Europe only on tape/disk. I believe that this is the situation with the upcoming "Barbarian", but will have to ask him again to clarify. :ponder:

BTW, how are things going with your ... rarity list

The rarity list isn't mine, it's part of atarimania.com

Most of the rarity values were there well before I was part of the team.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. He's a good guy to deal with, too.

Is this the 4 shades of one color Polish version that is coming to cart - or a new "proper" version?

FYI - only a couple of screen demo of the " A8 conv. of the Psygnosis ST/Amiga game" exists - coded by Russell Knight for me (Harlequin) but never taken to production due to Atari killing the A8 line...

but everybody must agree: the c64 gs is truely ugly :) ... compared to our handsome xegs this device looks like a sallow monster.

Agreed! :)

Btw, i like those 'user friendly' pastel coloured buttons on my XEGS... :ponder:

Nothing at all wrong with the size and shape of the buttons, IMHO, just the color choice. Though they should have had them all down on the keyboard for easier access if your kicking back with the KB in your lap. The Ironic thing is that if you disassemble the XEGS keyboard (I did with my spare), it has the exact same keyboard layout as the XE computer line, with spots for all those buttons. The only thing hiding it all is the top case. They could have even had the buttons in both spots. On a whole, the XEGS looks good as a unit.

Video 61 made lots of "unofficial" carts.

Fair point, just that it wasnt 'indicated' or 'implied' in the postee's comments

BTW, how are things going with your cas archiving and your rarity list (more interested in your rarity list)

I never implied or indicated anything becuase it wasn't my intention or thinking to make sure the list was "authentic" with "original" cartridges. The fact is that everything listed there IS IN FACT a cartridge if you buy it from Video61. I don't care if the game was originally released as cart or not, it's just a list of carts available from them, NOW. all I did was cut and paste the actual catalog page from the online site. There is absolutely no "problem" with that list at all.

Lance has received permission, though, to legally sell cartridge versions of some games originally released in Europe only on tape/disk. I believe that this is the situation with the upcoming "Barbarian", but will have to ask him again to clarify. :ponder:

I don't believe Dan Strikes Back (English Software) was one of them! Does Lance have documentary proof to the contrary?
