Favorite Video Game Music?

Recommended Posts

My favorite of all time is symphony of the night but as far as older than '95 goes i'd go with final fantasy 3. Super Metroid,Castlevania 4 and Link to the past were good too. The snes had some great sounding tunes for a cartridge based system.

Out of the older games, CastleVania 3 has the best music by far IMO.

As a whole series, CastleVania or Final Fantasy would be my choice.

Castlevania definitely had good music. The first Final Fantasy had good music, but it got old really quick. And it really bothered me that they never really changed the battle music in any of the later FF's. It just got more orchestrated.

I was not a big fan of Super Metroid's music. It seemed kind of boring or something, like it was missing something. Maybe I was missing something; it's been awhile. A Link to the Past had some good tunes, although many of them were old LoZ tunes orchestrated. But hey, there's nothing wrong with that.:)

Indeed. The whole series had great music all around.

Do you mean the victory music?

Because the battle music has been different for every Final Fantasy I've played.

Yeah, sorry. I think FFI and FFII had the same battle music, but most of them had the same victory music. I guess that's OK...

Fianl Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy X

True, but FFVII was for PS and FFX was for PS2. Classic, please. If we were considering the modern consoles, with their fancy-pantsy greater-than-16-bit graphics and sound, nobody would vote for the old stuff (except for me).

Except the general rule here seems to be that the Dreamcast is considered a classic system, and only a current-gen/next-gen system goes in modern gaming.

I'd have to say Ridge Racer. That music gets my blood pumping every time I hear it, especially "Rare Hero."

Other good music comes from the mid- and late-'80s games from Atari and Sega, particularly Paperboy, Marble Madness, Space Harrier and OutRun.

The Commodore 64 was also a good source of game music, with Rambo: First Blood Part II, Turbo OutRun, Thunder Blade (the U.S. release, anyway), Sky Shark, and tons of others worth mentioning.

I know, except my main point of this thread was to see what other people thought of the old video game music. I know that as a general rule, the PS and DC are considered "classic," but I didn't want to include them in this thread (although I can't stop people from posting anything they want). On my original post I said pre-PS.

I don't know about favorite, but the music for the first and second levels of Super Mario Bros. on NES is indelibly linked with pizza in my mind because the first place I heard that music was in Pizza Hut.  They had one of those cool table models.  So, I guess that is my most memorable video game music.  As for favorite music, I don't know.  I always liked games that you could change the radio channel and hear a different song.  I'm not sure which racing game that was on, but I'm pretty sure it was a racing game for SNES.  Maybe Top Gear?

You're probably thinking of outrun, but top gear has some awesome music as well.

Chrono Trigger, Bubble Bobble, and Lunar: SSSC has had some wonderful music, with Chrono Trigger on top for me.

Fair enough.

I'd ouyt 'em in modern systems, but I'm apparently the minority.

Missed that.

As for pre 95 music, that's a hard one.

Final Fantasy Legend 3

Pitfall II

Burai Fighter (Ken Lobb, whom Goldeneye's "Klobb" is named for, designed this quiet gem of a game for the NES. I highly recommend you try it out!)

From all games, my vote is for Saturn games in general, like Shining the Holy Ark, NiGHTS, Gex, and Worldwide Soccer: Victory Goal Edition.

Oops, forgot one:

Arcade version of Daytona USA. It's hard to believe that game is eleven years old.

I also liked the music from the Jurassic Park pinball machine, but I'm not sure if that counts.

So many great tunes, so little time. Here are a few of my favorites...

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!

Contra

Gauntlet (NES)

Castlevania

Metroid

Wizards & Warriors (the low-health music is also great)

Wizards & Warriors II: Ironsword

Xybots

Klax (Lynx, not in-game but the title music is outstanding)

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

StarFox

Street Fighter II

Super Castlevania IV

Altered Beast

Golden Axe

The Immortal

Sonic the Hedgehog

Starflight (what little music there is, it's good)

- Jason

Ridge Racer (just the main theme)

C64 - Sanxion (but mainly the loading music)

ZX Spectrum 128 - Thanatos and Glider Rider

Paperboy

That little jingle in Gauntlet when it's sitting in attract mode.

Oh, and Pacland.

Goodness, look at the selections! I noticed the suggestion was pre-Playstation, but I also notice most of the nods go to games from systems just barely pre-Playstation.

Well, this gamer from the grave is going with Mountain King and The Empire Strikes Back for the 2600. John Williams on a 2600 is good; a classical piece like "In the Hall of the Mountain King" on the 2600 is priceless.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!

What?! You LIKE that tune when Mac dons his pink suit and goes running? One of the most annoying sounds ever, in my opinion. But to each his own. If you don't believe me, check this out.
