ttony_at #1 Posted June 8, 2005 I have "Smurfs: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle". And I've tried to jump over the first gate or fence but just can't do it. We've tried so many times I'm begining to think there's something wrong with the game. The furthest Smurf has jumped is on the fence at the right end of it. He just doesn't stay up long enough in the air while moving to make it pass this darn fence. It seems unlikely to me it would be so difficult. Do anyone else have trouble jumping over this fence? BTW, I also have it for Colecovision and the same fence in that version isn't has hard to jump over.
Dones #2 Posted June 8, 2005 I have not played this in a while but I think you have to press up on the joystick twice. If done right the smurf will do a small jump followed by a forward long jump. If you keep pushing up you can keep long jumping for as long as you can (takes some practice but nothing difficult). Good luck!
cyberneticimplant #3 Posted June 8, 2005 I had trouble jumping over the fence.
Dr. Morbis #4 Posted June 8, 2005 Try this: stop near the fence and stand still. Now press Up on the joystick. You're little Smurf will jump straight up. The second he lands press Up again. Voila! You're Smurf will sail forward and over the fence on his big second jump. BTW, get used to this double jumping because you won't get far without it (as you've already noticed). Almost every screen in the game requires a double jump to get through.
Osbo #5 Posted June 8, 2005 correct! double jumping is everything in Smurfs
cyberneticimplant #6 Posted June 8, 2005 (edited) Very weird controlls. Can you imagine something like this in a modern game? Edited June 8, 2005 by cyberneticimplant
Ralph3 #7 Posted June 8, 2005 You had a double jump in Tony Hawks Underground 2 Remix (PSP), and Unreal Tournament that I can think of off the top of my head.
Osbo #8 Posted June 8, 2005 Never had a problem playing smurfs, or any atari game in general, now with Tony Hawk games, I have no clue what's going on...
Mindfield #9 Posted June 8, 2005 I tried jumping over the fence once. I ended up sitting on it, and now I can't decide what to do.
StanJr #10 Posted June 8, 2005 yeah, I always wondered why the button was not used for the jumping.
cimerians #11 Posted June 8, 2005 (edited) CV version: Well...if you notice there's two types of obstacles. Small and large. Small grass, large grass, small staligmite, large staligmite. The programmers figured that on the large obstacles you would use the large jump and on the smaller you would use the smaller jump. Everyone I knew, including myself simply used the large jump throughout the whole game and the small jump when appropriate. I also cheated on the prairie and castle screens. If I didn't like the layout, I would just leave that screen and enter it again until the layout I got was easy but being careful not to run out of time doing it. +SpiceWare #12 Posted June 8, 2005 Very weird controlls. Can you imagine something like this in a modern game? 870256 A lot of games I've played on the PS1 and PS2 use "double jump". Crash Bandicoot, Spryo, and Ratchet & Clank come to mind.
maibock #13 Posted June 8, 2005 Halo 2 has a jump button AND a "jump higher" button
NE146 #14 Posted June 8, 2005 Well.. it IS unintuitive for sure until you figure out what it does. When using the joystick to jump, you'd think you'd have to push up and forward to sail past the fence... especially since that control works in that way. (i.e. push up and forward: he jumps forward, push up: he jumps up) So you never really realize he does that major jump forward on the second hop up until you actually try it. I remember Colecovision smurf rescue being very hard for a while.. then I discovered the long jump on the second push up.. and all of a sudden it got very easy! NE146 #16 Posted June 8, 2005 (edited) A lot of games use double jumping.. it's not that weird. 870608 Name one that had the same mechanism (up twice.. and the 2nd "up" jumps you FORWARD) before Smurfs rescue. tssk #17 Posted June 15, 2005 Come to think of it, is it possible that smurf has the first double jump mechanism (where the second jump gives you more air?)
Jess Ragan #18 Posted June 15, 2005 You had a double jump in Tony Hawks Underground 2 Remix (PSP), and Unreal Tournament that I can think of off the top of my head. 870267 I think it's more accurate to compare Smurf's double jumps to the ones in Super Mario 64, because in both games, you have to hit the ground before you can jump again. The double jumps in other games (World Heroes 2, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Super Friggin' Hard Ghouls 'n Ghosts, etc.) defy gravity, giving your character an extra boost while they're still hanging in mid-air. Foxsolo2000 #19 Posted June 15, 2005 My biggest problem with Smurf was trying to reach the Smurfette in the castle for it needed precision jumps to get onto the chair and then the ledge above where she awaited you. A nice game graphically though.

A nice game graphically though. 874621 As soon as you're on that screen, walk a step or two forward and then just press up repeatedly until you've rescued her. It's actually too easy when you know what to do. In later levels you have to do it very quickly so that the bat doesn't get you.
