New shrinkwrapped games!!

Recommended Posts

I have a question to ask all of you. If you buy a new 2600 game that is shrinkwrapped but the shrinkwrap is starting to crush the box, would the value of the game drop if you remove it but still do not open up the game box?

I have lots of good games like Pengo, Montezumas Revenge and even a couple of 2800 games like Raiders of the lost Ark & Asteroids from japan that are starting to get crushed by the shrinkwrapping.

OOOO! Tough one. The gamer in me says unwrap it baby, but the little collector deep inside would love to see it remain intact. But to what peril of the box. AAARRGGGHHH! The dilemna! I'm no help!

You could try cutting the shrinkwrap on the bottom of the cart. Just cut a small slit to make a little flap, pull the box out of the shrinkwrap a little to relieve the crushing pressure of the cellophane and slide it back. Then you can just carefully tape or heat seal the small flap you made. I did this for some sealed original Macintosh boxed programes (MacDraw, MacProject and the elusive 68000 Development System) and I can carefully pull the boxes out of the cellophane (it keeps it form) to get at the contents. When I'm done, I just slide the box back into the cellophane shell. If I'm not doing a good job explaining this, the best thing I can relate this method to is to look at the shrinkwrap on a pack of cigarettes and study how people who smoke open the shrinkwrap, but leave a majority of it intact.

It's late. I can't think straight so my writing may appear to be rather incoherent.

I would say if you know someone at a video store check with them if you can use thier shrink wrapper to re-seal the box after. then you can take it out and fix the box then reseal it to protect it.

I bought a shrinkwrap machine for $150 from Stevenson Industries.

What I do to carts that have crushing shrinkwrap is to take off the shrinkwrap and re-shrinkwrap them loosely. Then I use a razor blade to cut a flap on the top of the box along the openings. This way the box is protected and I can still get inside to the cart, instructions, etc.

I also do this to really rare carts to protect the boxes. Works great especially on boxes that tend to scuff like the silver spectravision boxes, etc.

Hope that helps,

John

Yes, but now we beg the question: Is the original shrinkwrap more valuable than a re-wrap??? Collectors???

That's part of what I wanted to know. Is the game more valuable crushed in the original shrinkwrap or remove the old shrinkwrap, (But not open the box), and place it in some new shrinkwrap.

One thing good about the original shrinkwrap crushing the box, you know it hasn't been rewrapped. Although, I suppose it could have been sealed for years, got crushed, then opened, then re-sealed.

Yikes, I hate this dilema. What I do is cut the shrinkwrap from the very top, so I can open the box, but leave the the wrap around of the rest. I know this doesn't really solve the problem of the wrap crushing the boxes, but I hope this helps.
