still harping on minigames

Recommended Posts

Heh. I had an idea for a homebrew party game, like for DreamCast or something: "Block Party", with tons and tons of minigames...the theme would be the fact that for most of the games each player is controlling a square. (Actually it might be cool to keep everything strictly 2D, keep that old school flava) Part of that is a gimmick, partially it's easier to do collision detection...

Anyway, I wonder what the copyright protection individual minigames enjoy? I mean I'm tempted to cruise through Mario Parties and Fuzion Frenzy and figure out which ones really click and try to imitate them...hmmm.

You could probably get away with it... after all, a lot of those mini-games are based on previously released titles, ranging from Donkey Kong to Duck Hunt. Personally, though, I think you should try to come up with some fresh ideas... that's what makes each new installment of Wario Ware entertaining.

Well, at least half of the charm of Wario's minigames wasn't the game mechanic but the quirkiness of the setting. There really was only a much smaller # of actual "games", but a lot of charm in the presentation.

That's one thing that would be an interesting preperation for Mario Party; cataloging each game, and categorizing them (and noting which ones are deriviative or straight copies of other minigames in the series.)

Just thinking for a few seconds, game types include "button mashers", "escapes", "buttons in pattern" "reaction timers", "arena fights", "novelty controls" etc....

And besides wouldn't a 4 person joustpong/flap-ping tourney be original? ;-)
