Buying an Atari 2600 console today

Recommended Posts

I bought a 2600 when they first came out X yrs ago. I had done two gaming system upgrades and never played my 2600 anymore. In fact most of my games were unplayable anymore for some odd reason. When I moved I gave my system and all of my games to a friend.

HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS: If I were to buy a system today, what could I expect?

Will many games be unplayable like my old system?

Is it possible to find sytems that are still MIB? I understand from a post on another thread that $50 is about as much as one should pay for a 2600. I assume this is a used unit.

Is this Austrlian game unit with 100-some games a good option, provided you can find an adaptor for it to work in the USA?

Is the best place to buy a 2600 and 2600 games ebay?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm curious about the people that are playing
2600 games now. Are you playing on the original 2600 game system that came out in the late 1970's?
Thanks for indulging all my neo-newbie questions.
The best place to buy a 2600 or games is a fleamarket, there you can see in what condition the system or the carts is/are.
At ebay you can get many good games, but sometimes for "good" prices.
1) Yes you can still get a 2600 unit MIB today.
2) Your old games must have been left in water for a long time for them not to work anymore. I have yet to buy a 2600 game from any place that did not work, the games are made tough.
3) games and units from Australia are pal formates and do not look to good on U.S. TV, but there are some people who say they can make them work.
4) Ebay is a good place to get any Atari 2600 item you want, but it's not always cheap and some people are just out of there minds and ask for way too much money for there items, but not all.
I hope this answers some of your Questions.
Not true! I'll leave all the laser blasts, too!
That's OK. If he won't tell me I'll find it! At least I know there's one around here somewhere....
I just got one not to long ago and some games some from some of the good people here on this board that started me off. I also bought a system and a few games on e-bay ( a vader model even though I wanted a 6 switch woodgrain of my childhood), before I found this sight. anyway I went to a flea market on the advice from people here and I found games and the system I wanted and for much cheaper so I bought it there. ANyway check the flea market it is a gold mine out here! As for MIB this is ok if you are collecting, I wanted one for playing so MIB did not apply THese things are like tanks and clean up nice. As long as it works and is not physiclly damages or in ill repair It should look good after a cleaning. THere is also alot of helpful hints on this sight on how to clean the carts to get them to work again.
I haven't compared their prices, but it is a boutique shop, so I'm sure their games will be more expensive than at a flea market.
Thanks, guys for the great advice. I found a funky retro store in my neighborhood that sells many atari products including games MIB.
