BurgertimeBoy #1 Posted February 22, 2002 This started as a sub thread on the Moon Patrol thread. Catchiest music is NOT necesarily the best music, but what 2600 music do you think is the catchiest? What video game tune haunted you all day? What melody did you find yourself humming away from the game console? MY PICKS: Moon Patrol Pressure Cooker
The Night Phantom #2 Posted February 22, 2002 Frogger, definitely. (By the way, you double-posted; you might try deleting the other topic.)
Inky #3 Posted February 22, 2002 Moon PAtrol, Pitfall
Mindfield #4 Posted February 22, 2002 Pitfall II here, too. It still haunts me. :-)
bcprs1 #5 Posted February 22, 2002 I always liked the intro songs for Jr Pac-Man. I especially like the song for the 6th maze. Also, you just HAVE to love Pitall II. I hum that tune in my sleep.
pitfallaimee #6 Posted February 22, 2002 I would have to say Pitfall 2, Empire Strikes Back and *ducks* the Pac Man intro. It's sort of like when you hear nail scratches on a black board--you can't get the sound out of your mind. It's not catchy, and it's not really music...but it really sticks with you. ForEVER. King Atari #7 Posted February 22, 2002 Well, I like Pitfall II. Pressure Cooker had some pretty catchy music, too. But, my picks are for Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II (both versions of GBII).
Tempest #8 Posted February 22, 2002 Pitfall II definetly had the best music on the 2600, but I think it's cheating to use an extra chip. Even though they're really short, the opening tune and between level tunes in Crystal Castles are really well done. Tempest
Baby Mac #9 Posted February 22, 2002 In my less than adequate experience, id have to say Double Dunk. Isat there for 5 minutes before playing the game for the first time, because the music was so cool. And even though it isnt as good, the BMX airmaster theme has been in my head for the past week as well.
Adrian #10 Posted February 22, 2002 The theme to Moon Patrol haunts my dreams. It pops into my head at the most random times. Some weeks, it *simply won't go away.* Moon Patrol is my vote.
NE146 #11 Posted February 22, 2002 I always thought that Moon Patrol was a take off of the song "Killing Floor"
bergbros #12 Posted February 22, 2002 Pitfall 2 and it is for the different tunes like when you grab the balloon and it changes into that circus tune. Excellent for a system whose biggest drawback is its bad sound system. Mountain King when you get the flame has a real heart racing theme that is perfect as you are racing against the clock. Montezuma's Revenge has a funky theme when you reach the treasure room. BTW I don't think it is cheating to use an extra chip. THere is nothing wronf in trying to get the most out of the system. When I first got it, I would play it in the middle of the night with the lights off. Spooky, man...
goatdan #14 Posted February 22, 2002 I agree with most of you! Hands down, it is Pitfall II for me. It is the only 2600 game that I can remember every change of tempo and beat for!
moycon #15 Posted February 22, 2002 The music that plays when your walking around the screen in Popeye. DoDoDooDooDoDoDooDooDoooDOooDodododo Also ET title screen song. DoooooDooooooDoDoDoDoDoDooooooooDooooDoDoDoDooo.

BurgertimeBoy #17 Posted February 22, 2002 I had Pitfall II and I remember the music being catchy, but I can't recall how it went. It's been years since I played it and I have since given my 2600 console and games away. Could you hum a few bars of the Pitfall II theme for me? +Trebor #18 Posted February 22, 2002 There is the obvious: Pitfall II, Frogger However, I also enjoy (although not necessarily original): 1. Raider of the Lost Ark (As soon as you power on the system) 2. E.T. There are a couple things here. (a) When you first power it on (b) The melody while running (Move ET while holding down button) 3. MOTU: The Power of He-Man (After you defeat Skeletor in Castle Greyskull). 4. Sneak-n-Peak - Again powered-on/start-up melody, as well as when you find the spot of the person hiding. 5. Ms. Pac-man - Start of the game melody. 6. S.W. - Empire Stikes Back (When you 'use the force'). -Trebor
Snider-man #19 Posted February 22, 2002 My favorite 2600 music: 1. Pitfall II - Great song with different "themes" - when you grab a gold bar, when you're on the balloon, when you die, the normal "travelling music." Great stuff. 2. Halloween - Wizard Video Games really managed to cram a pitch-perfect duplicate of the horror movie theme. When I first booted this game up, I was stunned that they were able to duplicate the music so accurately. 3. Pressure Cooker - I heard that reason the music works so well is because the programmer went to the Activision "music department" and said, "Here's the notes the 2600 can hit without distorsion. Make a song out of these 8 or 9 notes." Clever idea. Work within the sound limitations. 4. Tapper - A different theme song for each bar you're working in as well as a different song for the bonus round. Plus, the soings don't end, it's one long flowing refrain. Lots crammed in there. 5. Commando by Activision - Using "white noise" to sound like a military drum cadence was very clever.
popeal #20 Posted February 22, 2002 Great topic! Here are my favorites: Pitfall II Moon Patrol Vanguard He-Man and The Masters of The Universe ...and the samples from Yars' Revenge and Pac-Man (because they still use them in ads for that 'video game' noise) Al
+-^CrossBow^- #21 Posted February 22, 2002 Hmm...okay... Pitfall II (No brainer...) Moon Patrol Gyruss Frogger and last but not least... all the various tunes in Sneak n' Peak!!! J/K...they aren't catchy...but they do tend to stick with you and haunt you in your sleep.
slapdash #22 Posted February 23, 2002 Vanguard, as someone has already mentioned. The interlude on Rabbit Transit. :-) NE146: "Killing Floor"? You're not talking Galactic Cowboys are you?
NE146 #23 Posted February 23, 2002 quote: NE146: "Killing Floor"? You're not talking Galactic Cowboys are you? Well I guess the song Killing Floor is some kind of old blues standard that's been covered by various bands, hence it's similarity to the Moon Patrol song. However, the one I'm thinking of is not by Galactic Cowboys (never heard it actually) but rather the version by Jimi Hendrix from his Monterey concert
Skatepunk60 #24 Posted February 23, 2002 Hands down sneak and peak stick with you for years
bcprs1 #25 Posted February 23, 2002 Actually I completely forgot about Gyruss. Now that was some great music to play a game to. Also, I know everyone hates the game, but Double Dragon has some great music. What I also love about it is that the music changes every level (most people can't get past level 1 which is why they don't know). When you finally beat the game, it also plays a cool victory song.
