+Omegamatrix #1 Posted June 26, 2005 Hi there, who knows if you can use 7800 joysticks on the 2600? I was wondering in particular about the 7800 Joypad.
CPUWIZ #2 Posted June 26, 2005 Short and simple: Yes!
Lauren Tyler #4 Posted June 27, 2005 Frankly, I would kill to get a joypad for my 7800, since ProLines are rather awkward to use!
Danno #5 Posted June 27, 2005 Best Electroincs has them for $15.
Atariboy #6 Posted June 27, 2005 They don't seem to be that high of quality in my opinion, or mine is just worn out. Can't play stuff like Ms. Pac-Man with it since you don't know if you press a direction if she will go that direction or keep going into a ghost for example, just not very accurate for me. I'd like to get a couple NES pads (The dogbone ones for the toploader) converted for the 2600 and 7800, but not aware of anyone that does it.

I've done it with a regular one already, maybe I'll take apart a dogbone tomorrow and see.
Atariboy #8 Posted June 27, 2005 I'm not sure, but they're the only new 1st party ones I've been able to find just in case I could find someone to convert a couple of them.
Lord Thag #9 Posted June 27, 2005 Why not use a master system or genesis pad? They work just as well, and no modding needed....
Atariboy #10 Posted June 27, 2005 What about 2 button 7800 games like Pole Position?
Lord Thag #11 Posted June 27, 2005 What about 2 button 7800 games like Pole Position? Well, the question was about the 2600, and the sticks work fine for that. I use a Geny arcade stick for my 2600 personally. I like the arcade feel. You would have to mod the sticks for 7800, of course, but for that system, I find the pro sticks work fine. I never found them that much of a hindrance.
Atariboy #12 Posted June 28, 2005 (edited) Well, I was the one that brought up converted NES pads for use on it, not him. So I assumed you had directed that toward me. Edit-Nevermind, I read too much into what to you said first, I see what you meant now. Good suggestion I'd say, I've used my Genesis pads in my 2600 quite frequently and they work great. Easiest and cheapest way to do it for sure. Edited June 28, 2005 by Atariboy
Lauren Tyler #13 Posted June 30, 2005 For some reason, Pole Position II only used one button (at least my copy did.) Both buttons accelerated, neither braked. Then again, as a professional like myself will tell you, you really don't need to brake. Just use high and low gear and/or let off of the accelerator! Perhaps something was flaky about your controller that caused the game to only recognize it as a single-button controller.
+-^CrossBow^- #15 Posted June 30, 2005 The games weren't smart, the prolines have resistors inline of the fire buttons. So when you push them the 7800 can read the actual value of the signal and know that it is button two or whatever. On standard 2600 games or any other pad plugged in with multiple buttons, the buttons will either all do primary fire or some will and some won't. On my genesis pads, I think buttons 1 and 2 will do primary fire and button 3 does nothing at all. But if you could figure out the exact values of the resistors and such, I am sure it would be possible to just solder one on the cable for that signal right? Hmm..just thought of how to fix my Dreamcast dancepad now...interesting....I love these forums!
LocalH #16 Posted July 1, 2005 If the second fire button is handled the same way as on the Amiga, then you can use a standard Genesis pad - B is button 1 and C is button 2. I used to use one to play Mortal Kombat on my Amiga years ago, and it was much better with two buttons.
+FujiSkunk #17 Posted July 1, 2005 The games weren't smart... I beg to differ. Plug a single-button joystick into your 7800 and then play Pole Position II, Asteroids, or Xevious. All three modify game play if a single-button joystick is plugged in. Pole Position II acts the way LarcenTyler describes. Asteroids converts to 2600-style control, with "down" being hyperspace. And Xevious uses the single fire button for both bombs and shots (regardless of which way the difficulty switch is set).

That would make 7800 asteroids much better IMHO. I hated to two button control on that one.
