AlexKIDD #1 Posted July 6, 2005 I'm not sure if this has been done on here before. I did a search and couldn't find it. So what's your favorite 16-bit system? I love all of them and it's pretty hard to decide but I think I'm going to go with the turbo. The snes beats it out in terms of Rpg's but for most other genres I prefer the turbo. I love the fact that it doesn't have a ton of games but most of them are good and if you get a converter to play pc engine it can have a ton of games. Genesis is great too but that's the one I had as a kid so I kind of played it out. It also has the weakest graphics and sound in my opinion. Well anyway they're all great but i'm picking the turbo. vgcollector666 #2 Posted July 6, 2005 Genesis is defenitly the best out of them. It had the best games, although I do agree that it didnt have as good of graphics as the the SNES it had a better variety of games.
Jess Ragan #3 Posted July 6, 2005 I can't choose. Ten years ago, it would have been the Genesis, without a moment's hesitation, but now, I'm not sure. I've even warmed up to the Turbografx-16 in recent years, now that I can play its library of Japanese games. 1943 Kai could bring down a whole fleet of mediocre Genesis and Super NES shooters. classicgamingguy #4 Posted July 6, 2005 I really enjoyed owning an SNES back in the day. I loved the variety of games and the famous characters as well. Yes, I have to admit it, I'm still somewhat of a Nintendo fanboy, much to my eternal shame. lol The Castlevania Series, Mario, Metroid, all were great long-lasting characters. AMG #5 Posted July 6, 2005 I love both the SNES and the Genesis. But I have to give the nod to the SNES.
Atarifever #6 Posted July 6, 2005 Genesis all the way. When I was younger, my brother owned a Genesis and I owned a SNES and I was always jealous. I can't explain why, but I've never really liked the SNES much. I currently have every console I own hooked up excluding the SNES, which I never play anyway. I haven't played the Turbo in years and the only times I ever did play it were when stores had display models set up. I do remember that the first time I played it I was blown away though. Flojomojo #7 Posted July 6, 2005 I voted SNES, but one really needs a Genesis as well to get many of the good games of the time, particularly those from Sega and EA. I never really got into the NEC system, but Devil's Crush Pinball is amazing and I've considered getting a machine just for that.
chrisbid #8 Posted July 6, 2005 the genesis is more of a classic console like the 2600, which excels in action, sports, and arcade games, while the snes is arguably the first modern console which emphasizes pretty graphics and sound over gameplay, an rpg fans wet dream. i think to get the full early 90's 16bit experience, one needs to have both, but if im forced to pick one, i say genesis
kickinwing #9 Posted July 6, 2005 the turbo grafx was not a true 16-bit system, and what about the intellevision, yes you heard right. It had a 16-bit processor, just not the graphic capability.
chrisbid #10 Posted July 6, 2005 then, the true question is "favorite system from the 16-bit era"
+legeek #11 Posted July 6, 2005 In terms of the poll, I pick SNES I like the Turbo and Genesis, but I get more use out of the Super Nintendo. In broader terms of 16-bit, I'd probably pick either Amiga or Neo-Geo Cheers, Ben
joeybastard #12 Posted July 6, 2005 (edited) I like all 3 of them alot but the SNES is my top choice. The Genny has some great stuff but I never got into the games as much as the SNES. The TG16 just rounds out the other 2 nicely because it has some really unique and vastly underrated titles. Edited July 6, 2005 by joeybastard
Cybergoth #13 Posted July 6, 2005 Hi there! I voted SNES, but one really needs a Genesis as well to get many of the good games of the time, particularly those from Sega and EA. I never really got into the NEC system, but Devil's Crush Pinball is amazing and I've considered getting a machine just for that. Anything wrong with the Genesis version of Devil's Crush? I owned it back in the day and IIRC it was pretty good Greetings, Manuel
kickinwing #14 Posted July 6, 2005 if you like Devil's crush, play Alien Crush, it's just as good.
maibock #15 Posted July 6, 2005 Having enjoyed the NES, I bought an SNES as soon as it came out, but soon there-after became jealous of my neighbor who had a Genny, because of all the fantastic sports games. Once I got my own, it was great. Also having a Nomad helps propel my enjoyment factor for Genny games.
Lord Helmet #16 Posted July 6, 2005 I owned them both. Still do. Still play my SNES, hardly ever bust out the Genny. Sports games are better on the Genny, but they are all outdated now. Cross platform games are typically better on the SNES, with a few exceptions. Sonic games are on the Genny, so when I do play it, it is usually for one of those games. SNES is my favorite of the era. No contest.

NE146 #18 Posted July 6, 2005 As one who willfully forked out the $250 for each of those systems upon their respective launches (and since the Genesis and TG16 launched at the relative same time.. it hurt a lot ) I couldn't see myself without one or the other two. Let me just say that the Turbografx is my solid favorite, but if forced to choose only one, I would say SNES by default simply because of it's library. I love my Genesis too so don't get me wrong, but if I was forced to choose one.. well, SNES.
Trip_Cannon #19 Posted July 6, 2005 SNES. It had the better versions of Street Fighter.
+FujiSkunk #20 Posted July 6, 2005 Genny. I'm a sucker for arcade ports, and the Genny had the best of them. Plus, I like Sonic better than Mario.
JB #21 Posted July 6, 2005 the turbo grafx was not a true 16-bit system, and what about the intellevision, yes you heard right. It had a 16-bit processor, just not the graphic capability. 886787 <3 I really couldn't choose a system from the era for my favorite. Once upon a time I would've said SNES without a moment's hesitation. My tastes have changed, and I now prefer the faster action that an SNES just isn't capable of in most situations. But SNES still has many excellent games, the sound system is exponentially more capable(this is the first system I ever fired a game up just to listen to the music on), and when they had a slower action-adventure or(Granas forbid) menu-driven RPG going, there were enough clock cycles left over to really pull out all the stops with the graphics hardware, resulting in some truly beautiful games(not that it affects whether said games are good or bad, but pretty pictures are still nice). The TG16/PCEngine, sad to say, I have never owned. My experience with it comes exclusively from emulation. But from what I've seen it truly does deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as the SNES and Genesis, and its failure in America is one of gaming's great losses. chrisbid #22 Posted July 6, 2005 SNES. It had the better versions of Street Fighter. 886911 it had the better looking version of street fighter ii, the snes controller was stiff, the triggers were horrible for fierce buttons, and capcom (likely at sega's request) made sure that all the arcade features made it into the genesis version (title screen, barrel stage, etc)
+FujiSkunk #23 Posted July 6, 2005 ...the [sNES] sound system is exponentially more capable(this is the first system I ever fired a game up just to listen to the music on)... Eh... The SNES's sound capabilities are a wee bit overrated, in my humble opinion. I can't deny the SNES's audio technology was in many ways superior to that of the Genesis. However, that superiority came at a price, the most obvious being storage. Digital samples can eat up a lot of space! My favorite example is Mortal Kombat II. On the SNES, only so much room could be spared for digital samples dedicated to the music. Consequently, you hear the same instruments in all the tunes, and often they sound too muffled or too "bright", a typical result of early digital music (remember MODs?). On the other hand, the Genesis music is awesome, some of my favorite on the console. The relatively small amount of code needed to program the FM synth allows for a wider variety of instruments, without any digital artifacting (sampled drums notwithstanding). The fact that I like '80s synth music probably makes me biased, but even so, I always thought the SNES was getting a little too much of the spotlight in that department. Jetboot Jack #24 Posted July 6, 2005 (edited) Although I had all 3 systems "back in the day" the Megadrive/Genesis was first out the door when I got onto the next generation. Although I kept all the great carts (Sonics, SOR, Ecco, Castle of Illusion etc), just in case :-) BUT I've never gone back to them, on the other hand the SNES I have kept and still enjoy, from Mario World to Super Contra, Mario Kart to Secret of Mana, and don't forget Actraiser or Zelda - the SNES had the best selection of 16 bit games................................. ........with the exception of the PC ENGINE or DUO! Now the PC Engine's catalogue is brimful of inventive, playable, exciting and just plain great games - I imported mine form Japan, and everyone was a winner! Add to that; it came in so many flavors (including 2 handheld systems) PLUS the BEST CD system of the generation (and the first) and you can start to see why I love it so! But in truth its the games (even thought the hardware was fantastic) - the best version of Ghouls and Ghosts, 1941, Dracula X, Devil Crash, Alien Crush, Legend of Hero Tonma, Ninja Spirits, Ninja Gaiden, Dungeon Explorer, SEGA arcade conversions, Street Fighter II, Bonk Series, fantasic RPG's like Y's and all with a decidedly NON-US/EUROPEAN style! But most of all it was the incredible shooters that made my day, Gunhed, Aeroblasters, Darius, Twinbee, Parodius, Gradius, Salamander, Mr Heli, Raiden/Super Raiden, Star Parodia, Spriggan, P47, R-Type (perfection) and SO many more!!! So I voted DUO.... sTeVE Edited July 6, 2005 by Jetboot Jack
Lord Helmet #25 Posted July 6, 2005 Sports games are better on the Genny, but they are all outdated now. 886886 Outdated? Do you mean the players are outdated? 886892 Well, obviously the rosters are outdated, but I was refering to the gameplay. It feels choppy to me and not as polished as versions of the same games on new platforms. Check out the original Madden game...
