Bringing the Arcade Hits Home for the 2600

Recommended Posts

Yup, Once upon a time the video arcades had ruled and made their presense known. Most video arcades were usually seen in malls, such as Time Out. Other places to find the classics were roller skating rinks, in the back sections of Flea Markets, pizza places, restruants, etc. Now when the Atari 2600 attempted to bring home the arcade hits home, it just seemed like everyone had to have it. And even though the graphics were blocky, it did provide some gameplay. But personally I think that the arcades should've stayed, since it was a fun place to go to, knowing that the arcade graphics were way better than Atari 2600. Back then, my dad was the one with the Atari, and upon being divorced, he had a huge collection of interesting games, but there were a few games he purchased and then brought it right back to the store, since the graphcis stunk that bad. I didn't even get to at least see it. I do have the Atari 80 games in one for my pc, and reliving the arcade hits as well as the Atari 2600 classics has enabled me to tap into my inner gaming child. It's kinda fun to compare the arcade hit Crystal Castles to the 2600 version to see what the kids got so excited about. To tell you the truth, I really didn't miss much, but I am very glad to have had the gaming experience.

What I also found interesting is that Atari did provide some interesting varierties for some of the hit classics. Such as Space Invaders. Who doesn't remember standing in line for about 40 minutes or longer to blast away the invaders of 1978. Anyway, Atari did provide 112 levels with varieties such as large and small cannons, zig zagging shields, invader bombs, and even invisible invaders, as well as two cannons playing on the screen at the same time. I can go on for hours in terms of my favorite hits, heck I even cry a large river everytime I watch the movie Tron, since it does bring me back to the hey day of the arcades. I had always been curious about the other home versions of classic aracde hits, since we didn't have it. Mostly I just wanted to see what it was like, and thought that there were many different game features. A classic fav of mine is Exidy's Venture.

Now Colecovision was way better to have the game on, but I thought that the 2600 version would provide levels which the monsters would shoot back at you, and even provide the ability to shoot and destroy the large hallmonster that entered the room. Pitty to only find out that it only had 2 levels and just kept repeating itself, for that is the only downside to 2600 gaming.

For the few memories I have of getting my 2600 Jr. at a garage sale, it was great, since sometimes I got a great deal getting a whole case of 2600 game carts, but who knew if they worked or not.

You've seen the hack where the 3rd level was added to 2600 Venture right?
