Atari-Jess #1 Posted July 20, 2005 I was in Thiefy Village (replace thiefy with value for the real name) and I wander off to the electronics section as I always do, and lo and behold a vast array of Atari 2600 cartridges were layed out before me. I was rather excited as one could expect and began to dig through. Not only was there not a single cartridge I didn't have, they were all individually priced at $4.99 It was absurd and just grew my frustration with Thiefy Village (I go there because I have practically no choice.) Mindfield #2 Posted July 20, 2005 For some reason different VVs price their stuff differently. One that I used to frequent regularily priced almost all of their carts at C$2.99. Nintendo stuff they tend to price higher for some stupid reason. (SMB/DH for $5? ) On the other hand one that's closer to where I live sometimes prices their carts at $1-2. Guess it just depends on where you go.
nintendo #3 Posted July 20, 2005 My "Thieffy Village" sells all their Atari carts for $5.97. But they sell Genesis carts for .97 cents.
sku_u #4 Posted July 20, 2005 You must have some bad luck. If you're really nice, maybe Atariager will reveal where he managed to find several complete copies of Eli's Ladder for 25 cents each.
Gregory DG #5 Posted July 20, 2005 I guess it depends on what game they're trying to sell for 4.99. Now, if it was a Crazy Climber, it'd be "crazy" not to buy it at 4.99.
Mindfield #6 Posted July 20, 2005 Well, it's certainly true that there might be that one in a million find at a VV of an ultra rare cart for five bucks -- at that point their insane prices seem insanely low. Of course, the chances of that are unbelievably remote. (Hell, the chances of finding, say, Air-Sea Battle is unbelievably remote) So for the most part most of them charge rediculous prices. The really sad part is that if you walk back in there a few days later, they'll be gone. I don't know what it is about the average patronship of VV stores, but there are far too many people who think they're getting a good deal for my liking, and I wish they'd just stop it, because they're making the VV managers think they're pricing things reasonably. Er... but if they're selling at that price then surely they are being priced reasonably? I mean, if people are willing to pay 5 bucks for a cart, and I was running a business, I sure as heck wouldn't stick a 25 cent price tag on them... would you? Personally I'd love it if all Atari carts were 25c but that's just not the way any more.....
D.Yancey #8 Posted July 20, 2005 Around here the Goodwill stores all price old game carts at $5 each including Atari. They will not bargain or give a better price for buying in bulk either. I've never found anything even remotely rare there.
SteveW #9 Posted July 20, 2005 There's a thrift I hit that has a basketload of Atari 2600 games (commons, naturally) priced between $3 to $4. But they've also got about 20 Odyssey2 games priced for $5. And yet, I've bought Dreamcast games and brand new Philips CD-i games for $3. It seems that they price games randomly. Atari-Jess #10 Posted July 21, 2005 Atari games while lovely, shouldn't be priced at the same price as NES games or other games. Thats why I buy older games, because they are supposed to be cheaper. Thats also why I love Atari, the vast majority of the games are all extremely common making getting the "best of" collection quite cheap. Value Village now caters to the diminishing middle class instead of being a store for people who can't afford to buy new games. While yes, 5 dollars isn't TERRIBLE for a video game, but when the game is 20 years old, it hardly seems fair. Its also why I like the Atari Community, because they understand that this stuff shouldn't be priced out of reach and are generally very friendly and generous with each other.
