If the "wumpus" (monster) is in one of those rooms, it will say "I smell a wumpus." You can either type "s" followed by the room number to shoot an arrow into that room, or "m" (or was it "g") to move into one of those rooms. The wumpus moves randomly from room to room, I think, but the strategy is mostly in finding paths between the rooms that encircle him so that you can figure out which of the rooms to shoot into. Kind of like being *on* the Minesweeper board, but there's only one mine, and the squares are linked through random tunnels. Or maybe not. Anyway, don't let the wumpus get you... The Eidolon #3 Posted July 21, 2005 Try here: http://www.pdp8.net/games/wumpus.shtml I don't know if there are several different versions. Probably. I used to play this game on the HP3000, though I preferred text adventures like, um, Adventure. And Warp, Mystery Mansion and a few other games I have forgotten. The smell of printer toner and computer labs still makes me think of all those old mainframe games... --The Eidolon
Toucan #4 Posted July 22, 2005 HI! You can find the Instructions to the TI-99/4A version of "Hunt The Wumpus" here: http://www.videogamehouse.net/huntwumpus.txt . Let me know if this helps.
maibock #5 Posted July 22, 2005 as a side note - which most could care less about.. Hunt the Wumpus is a term that's been flying around my circle of contacts for awhile now. Around 1990 I found this game on a loacal BBS - the text version. It was always amusing to play but the name really stuck with me. I used it when I was not having luck finding something Just recently my wife asked what I was doing outside for so long and I muttered "Playing hunt the wumpus with the kids".. she replied "oh? what were you looking for?".. me "they were flinging golf balls around the yard and realized they lost a few, so I gotta find them before a mow the lawn".... It's used commonly in the office here.. replace "wild goose chase" with "hunt the wumpus" it's fun!

I refused to play the game because the animation when the wumpus ate you scared me.
Mr_8bit_16bit #7 Posted July 24, 2005 I used to like to play it and select foreign languages. I don't really remember why. I was little. I think it was because it was funny to either get caught by the wumpus, or fall into the pit, or kill the wumpus and then have the computer speak (in text) the equivalent of gibberish at you afterwards.
