The far upper region of Mountain King

Recommended Posts

Many people know about the hidden upper area in 2600 Mountain King. But has anyone here managed to explore the far upper region as described on Tony's site? I can't seem to create the extra ladders that let you climb up to the second flame. I've tried using paddles and Genesis controllers without success.

This image summarizes my understanding of how/where the extra ladders appear. Any advice would be appreciated!

No matter where you are in the secret kingdom, you should see the effects of using paddles. Maybe there's a problem with your system or controllers? Tony can probably explain the details of this better than anyone else.

Very interesting. Until the Genesis controller failed I thought I just had some cruddy paddles. Now I wonder if my 2600 JR could be the culprit. I do know that the secret kingdom doesn't always emulate accurately (on PC), but I assumed all 2600 consoles were internally identical. Maybe the various models recognize controllers differently - I don't know.

I really should track down a good 4 or 6-switch I suppose. I bought a cleaner-upper at a flea market a couple of years ago but unfortunately it was corroded inside.

FYI, it DOES matter what kind of 2600 system you're using. I used to know the explanation for why it mattered, but don't know the full details. For example, try a Mountain King cart on a regular 2600, and then a 7800, and I'll bet you can't get up there using the 7800.
