Sega sonic games labeled not for resale

I've seen several Sega genesis "sonic the hedgehog" game carts labeled "not for resale". Were these carts that came with game consoles, demos?

When we first got a genesis it came with a form you could send in + shipping and you could ge ta copy of sonic 1 free in addition to the copy of sonic 2 that came with it. I think these are the copys you are thinking of.

Yeah, I've got 3 games with those labels, Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles, and Subterrania all have those NOT FOR RESALE things on them. It just means that they were included with the system as a pack-in at some point.

Word was, some shady resellers were breaking apart systems with pack-in games, and selling the systems and games separately for more money. The game companies responded back then by adding "NOT FOR RESALE" labels to the pack-in games.

 

Of course, they respond now by simply not packing in games at all.

came with the system at its release i think that when genesis was launched you could get it with Sonic or without sonic
