Nimtene
I read this about Batman Returns in Portable Addiction #15 (Oct 1992): "The first 30,000 cartridges have Catwoman with red hair. Time Warner didn't like it. Catwoman does not have red hair in the movie, and her hair doesn't show that early in the movie, so they had to remove it." Can anyone confirm this? I've tried all three of my cartridges, and in all of them Catwoman has red hair. I have even downloaded a ROM and tried it on the Handy Emulator. She had red hair in the ROM as well. So does anyone have a copy where her hair isn't showing? Let me know! Edited August 13, 2005 by Nimtene
Clint Thompson
Interesting. 30,000 carts seems like a lot of carts though (considering the platform that is...) You bring a good point to the table. I wonder if they even bothered with actually removing it...
Harry_Dodgson
I believe it was John Scruch who said the corrected version looked like she had Mickey Mouse ears and I agree with that. I can't get that far in the game to tell which one I have... But I do have some files, someplace, that show the difference.
cthulhu
I've got 2 copies of Batman Returns and I've checked them both...they both have Catwoman with red hair.
Shaggy the Atarian
Hmm, I've never made it that far, it's a hard game. It would be interesting to see what she looks like in mine though.
Ferris
LOL funny to think Warner was still trying to boss Atari around after they turned it over to Tramiel.
cthulhu
Yes, it's a very hard game. The way I get to Catwoman is to use the level skip/ invincibility cheat, kill only the shotgun cops (if they shoot you during a jump, you'll fall down, and most likely to your death) and try to time my jumps (I tend to fall to my death a lot in this game). It shouldn't be that hard doing it this way...good luck.
EricDeLee
I hate to bring up an old topic.... but has anyone tried this or confirmed a different version of Batman Returns yet? Is there a possible label difference?

Would be interessting to find a ROM with differences... could not be more than one byte
Nimtene
My impression is that the programmers were supposed to alter the Catwoman sprite, concealing her hair (instead of simply changing the hair color with a byte palette swap.) Would be interesting if Harry Dodgson could locate his file that shows the difference.
EricDeLee
how far along into the game until you get to Catwoman??? I never made it too far in that game...
Nimtene
how far along into the game until you get to Catwoman??? I never made it too far in that game... She's at the end of the second level, where you have to traverse across the rooftops.
Songbird
Since I haven't ever seen screenshots uploaded for this, here are some where Catwoman does not have the red hair: This took me about 45 minutes to capture on Handy (thanks to the insane difficulty jumping during shotgun blasts) using a ROM from an authentic Atari development EPROM cartridge. If I get time, I'll try this on a different ROM to compare. Would be interesting to know if this did in fact make it into published carts! Songbird
Lo and behold, I got through the 2nd level quicker on the next ROM I tried! Here are the screens showing the red hair: This also came from a ROM dumped from an Atari development EPROM cartridge. I haven't looked to see how this ROM compares to the "regular" one floating around the net...
Tempest
So all they did was just remove the hair? She looks really weird without it. Question is, why did she have red hair to begin with? Did the programmer not have access to the movie beforehand and just guessed?
Flojomojo
Confusion with Batgirl in the old TV show, maybe?
sage
Thanks for posting this. To my knowledge, thsi is the first "prove" of this.

Lynxpro
LOL funny to think Warner was still trying to boss Atari around after they turned it over to Tramiel. They owned a 25% stake in Tramiel's Atari Corp from the very beginning.
