I really like the game i have past up buying it many times. But since this was the only game at the flea mnarket this weekend i didnt have i got it. I was really shocked at how good the game play is and i love the background and the red car. All tho i dont like the other cars on the game that weird yellow coler? Anyway all and all its the best raceing game ive played for the 2600 i even like it better than PP2 for the 7800 sep PP2 has more than one track.

Not bad isn't it? Considering the hardware limitations, it's a pretty faithful port.

I usually get my girlfriend to yell "prepare to qualify" at me to complete the effect.

Agreed, Pole Position is a great game. It's one of the games I never actually owned as a kid, but I always traded other folks for it at school so I could play it.

You don't know what your missing until you play the Atari 400/800 or 5200 version. It blows the 2600 version out of the water. However given the limitations of the 2600 its really not all that bad.

As to why the oncoming cars are yellow blobs, I have no idea. I figured they uesed Missile Sprites or something as the other cars, but they're too detailed for that. Its got to be for a technical reason though, I can't believe they'd let it look like that unless they had to.

I think they used the playfield for the main car. Especially since it's stationary (it's always in the middle of the screen). Maybe they used the reflective mode until the player turned the car.

The other cars I believe are player graphics. They are all one color plus the 3d effect would be easier by changing the width of the player as it got closer to your car.

Great game!!

I've always loved Pole Position, be it 2600 or 7800, but I was very disappointed with the 8 bit version, I think it could have been much better.

yep, you cannot beat Pole Position for race car action on the VCS. I was very impressed with how close this came to the real thing back in the day.

And I say "prepare to qualify" each time as well. :)

I seem to remember hearing one or both sides of the track were made using the ball. It stands to reason the center stripe was done with the missile for the oncoming car player(s). presumably the oncoming cars were not multicolor so they wouldn't affect the colors of the road stripes as well ... or laziness. :)

I hated this game back in the day. My brother picked it up for his b-day. I was more of a berzerk/defender kid back then.

Now I don't mind it all, it's pretty good. I do like enduro's variety a bit more, but PP is still a solid Atari title everyone should pick up.

Maybe someone could release a version that says "Prepare to qualify".

If a voice enhanced Berzerk can exist, I don't see why the hell not. :D

I never liked Pole Position on the 2600. Maybe I was too much of a fan of the arcade version to forgive the blobby cars. I thought Enduro was much, much better.

It just further proof that you are a true classic, kyle. Your words have withstood the test of time.

That would be because of my work ;) I like to give 'em the "Lazarus Treatment" if they are relevant.

I have the 2600 and 7800 versions. Sad to say I can't remember ever playing the 2600 version but I got hooked on the 7800 for a while. Got so close to the world record but I can't figure out how the person got their score. Mine was only good enough for 2nd, but I never made a tape. Anyways, someone smack me for never playing the 2600 port. I'll have to pop that in soon.

Pole position: Good for a short game if you don't want to play long. Never have to vary speeds, just stay full throttle forever. Good game.

Enduro: Very Long game. Must be extremely patient and not go full speed all the time. Be careful not to accidently hit the brake when turning. Gets extremely difficult for me when getting into the double digits of days. Very good game. I hate it ever so much! :)
