Ridenmy65 #1 Posted March 29, 2002 I picked up a cart this weekend that had this handwritten label marked "shark attack". Well I know the only shark attack is from apollo and the cart just did not match, so for 50 cents I could not go wrong and pick it up to see what it was. Well I put the game in and I see it was made by U.S. Games, The opening screen has a shark swimming around an octopus. Can anyone tell me what game I have? Is it "Name This Game?" or something else? Ridenmy65 #2 Posted March 29, 2002 P.S. In the big "VGR" game list there is a game called "Octopus" but on this site there is no such listing. hmmmm.
King Atari #3 Posted March 29, 2002 Sounds like Name This Game to me. Can you describe the label? Could be a proto (but I'm certainly no expert on protos).
Ridenmy65 #4 Posted March 29, 2002 Well, I wish I could describe the label. It only came with a handwritten piece of loose leaf paper taped to the cart. It is either "name this game" or I am wondering if there is a U.S. game called "octopus". In the VGR list there is one listed but not on this site. Ridenmy65 #7 Posted March 29, 2002 Thanks for the screenshot, I kind of figured that's what the game was, but was hoping that it was the game that "VGR" had listed as "Octopus" Maybe he has some bad info. Thanks again

Thanks again Unfortunately the VGR is list woefully out of date and hasn't been maintained in years. This was one of the incentives for Alex to create a 2600 rarity list several years ago, back when he was running The Atari 2600 Nexus (precursor to this site). There are many games on that list that don't exist, some wildly inaccurate rarity values, games that simply aren't on the list, and so forth. I highly suggest using a resource like our site or the Digital Press Guide if you want more accurate listings of games and their rarities. ..Al
slapdash #9 Posted March 29, 2002 "Octopus" is the name Carrere Video game "Name This Game" in Europe. You see, there was a contest to name the game, but I don't think they ever completed it. A wholesaler called Kandy Man, or perhaps a different one, supposedly ended up with a bunch of Data Age and US Games ROMs and were going to keep selling them, though I've never seen any proof that they did. But there were lists that mentioned a game called, variably, Guardian Of Treasure, Treasure Of The Deep, or Guardian Of The Deep, which I think was this game renamed. I'm happy to say that I won when Digital Press decided to finish the game after all. Hmm, I suppose I should actually have a cart made up with "my label" on it someday...
