NES Mappyland Question

I was playing Mappyland last night and got to the bonus stage which I think would be level 8. There's a bunch of cheese wedges to grab and then you go to the chick mouse at the top of the stairs. Every time I go to her she says I'm too late for her birthday party. No matter how fast I get to her, it says that. What am I doing wrong?

It's a timed level. You have to get all the items in a certain amount of time. That's what happened when I played the game. This guide has ways to get through the bonus levels the quickest.

Thanks, I'll try the path they say. I played that level about 50 times trying to find the fastest root but I guess I didn't.
