Wanted a discovery cartridge?

I don't read all news, but I would imagine that you are indeed looking for a Discovery Cartridge from Happy Computing.

 

Another one oldest cart is ready for bidding or buying in ebay recently, and it´s include a photo:

That is utterly ridiculous. Almost on par with these 'people' you see in the free-ads who want £50 (about $80) for 15" 2nd hand vga monitors.

 

Contrary to popular belief the Discovery Cartridge doesn't copy as much as is claimed. That and you're flying dark trying to find the right combination of settings.

Both were bought by the same guy, he is also the winning bid on the current one listed.

 

It seems none of them have had the all the options. Just a plain Discovery Cart.

 

Ive had three and all of the had all options except the clock. I think the chip is hard to find. Or cost more than its worth.

I have two of this cartridges.

One with an cartridge port, I solderd it my self when I was working for Atari in Sweden.

 

The other one has everything besides the cartridge port, clock, extra FDD port, MAC ROMS..

I had a 1050 Happy Drive with my XE so I was very happy when they released the Discovery Cart for the ST and I grabbed one - I agree that it didnt quite work like I thought but having the ability to add the Mac Roms for Spectre 128 made it quite handy

I did haver a happy disc. cart, hardly used it or never used it... got shot of it (sold it to AA member 'cathmandu' along with a dead ste... still waiting for me dough that he's sending me)

 

I also had a happy 1050 u/g years ago and afterwards a lazer.usd 1050 u/g (same thing) and a whole lot easier to use (apart from installing it) then the happy st cart

Hi, would just just like to add that I have now paid Mr. Carmel Andrews for the Discovery Cart I aquired from him. Thanks again. Sorry it took so long, would have been easier if you had a paypal account mind.

 

And have also repaired the busted STE, well almost, just need to get another floppy drive for it then it will be 100% working again.

Quite true. The el cheapo home made blitz cable copied far, far more disks and was *much* faster. Just didn't look as nice. Especially mine

I'm not sure exactly what this discovery cartridge is all about (please enlighten me) but I see people talking about Mac roms and spectre 128, so I'm guessing from what has been said that what ever this "discovery" cartridge is that it can become similiar to a spectre 128? I'm responding here becuase I just go a Spectre GCR with full documentaion, 128k mac roms, software, etc. I only payed $30 for the Spectre GCR package, with shipping it came to $35 I believe. The auction ran for 7 days, IIRC, and I just watched it, and on thelast day, nobody had bid, so I decided to bid at the starting $29.95 price, and ended up being the only bidder and winning it. As I said, I don't knwo what the Discovery cartridge is, so I don't know if this is a reasonable comparison.

Sorry to disagree, but this is actually quite wrong. There is NOT even a single disk that the Blitzer can copy and the Discovery Cartridge cannot.

 

It is true that the DC software is not at all very user friendly. And then many disks require quite some knowledge to get the right configuration. It is also true that analog copiers like the Blitz are faster, this is inherent to the analog copy method.

 

But what is more important than anything else is how an analog copier works. Analog copiers are not reliable at all, not even when copying disks without any protection. I wrote some notes about this a while ago, should be easy to search the forum and find them (I should really have a copy of that note this at my site, I don’t, sorry

There is not much in common between the Spectre and the DC. They are mentioned together many times, because if you own a DC you can use a pirated copy of Magic Sac and (with some limitations) of Spectre 128 as well.

 

The DC is a device for handling foreign disk formats and copy protections. The Spectre GCR is a Mac emulator with a hardware add-on for accessing Mac GCR disks.

Sorry to bring this very old thread back from the dead, but I've been reading about the Discovery Cartridge on the following site and it interests me a great deal:

What sort of price would a DC fetch today given that everything has been archived online and digital media has become so prevalent? Is it likely to be a lot cheaper or do people still want it as a collector's item?

That's not too bad a price (about £54 in UK money). Most people can't be bothered with disk copying now, but I quite like to do it for a bit of fun rather than any serious attempt at preservation. It's the thrill of the chase more than anything.

I've got one, I wish my DC had the clock installed in it, than it would be more useful in this day and time but for the most part the fast copying is fun to use.

Can anyone that has a Discovery Cartridge please post some external and internal shots of their device, I'm trying to complete the various versions that were available on the Atari forum wiki.
