+DamonicFury #1 Posted September 8, 2005 (edited) While I am quite aware that just about all arcade games can be emulated via MAME, I am interested in which ones have been given a proper legal release for Windows PC's. +FujiSkunk #2 Posted September 8, 2005 (edited) Are you looking just for games available in collections (I'm betting they aren't all emulated, especially games like San Francisco Rush that get pitiful frame rates in MAME), or games that are available to play in Windows, period? If the latter, then there are lots more games you can include in your list. Lots of DOS games released in the late '80s and early '90s will work (at least to a degree) on flavors of Windows that have a DOS foundation (Windows 95, Windows 98, maybe Windows ME). Sega released After Burner, OutRun, Thunder Blade, Space Harrier, Alien Syndrome, Golden Axe and Turbo OutRun. Taito released Arkanoid and Arkanoid II. Acclaim released Mortal Kombat (the first one, not yet available in any collection). Broderbund released Star Wars: The Arcade Game. Activision released Power Drift (a Sega arcade game that inexplicably did not get home distribution by Sega). And there are many others that I'm sure I'm forgetting. Edited for grammar. I guess I'm mostly interested in collections, although it wouldn't hurt to take note of perfect or very-nearly-perfect standalone releases as well. JB #4 Posted September 8, 2005 There were Microsoft Arcade, Return of Arcade, and Revenge of Arcade. Dun recall what games were in the packages, though.

Dun recall what games were in the packages, though. 927687[/snapback] Microsoft Arcade included games originally by Atari, and Return of Arcade and Revenge of Arcade included games originally by Namco. All have since been (or will be) released in much better form on later compilations, with one exception: Motos is included in Revenge of Arcade. Microsoft's releases are not emulations, and I wouldn't call them pixel-perfect, either. They're decent, but nothing spectacular. Rugxulo #7 Posted September 9, 2005 I never understood that stuff, and the supposed legal problems just seem pointless (why would anyone refuse to sell what is clearly marketable?). StarROMs sounded like a GREAT idea, but no companies took them up on it. Whatever, their loss. +DamonicFury #9 Posted September 9, 2005 I never understood that stuff, and the supposed legal problems just seem pointless (why would anyone refuse to sell what is clearly marketable?). StarROMs sounded like a GREAT idea, but no companies took them up on it. Whatever, their loss. It IS a shame that no company outside of Atari decided to work with StarROMS. I bought all the ROMS that I didn't already have on a compilation from StarROMS soon after they opened their website, and I've eagerly been awaiting more games ever since. Sadly, no more have appeared. I was offering my opinion on those compilations, is all. Compared to what the companies themselves have released, Microsoft's offerings are left in the dust. Still, if you just have to have a copy of Motos... You're right, Revenge of Arcade should be added for it's Motos support. Thanks!

I thought you were saying they shouldn't be considered for some reason. Never mind.
jdrew #11 Posted September 11, 2005 They're stand-alone releases, but I have Area 51 and Raiden II for Windows. Area 51's resolution isn't great, and the game suffers without a gun. It's been a while since I played it... so I don't remember much else. I've never played the arcade version of Raiden II, but the Windows release seems good enough that it's probably very close. JB #12 Posted September 11, 2005 Virtual On. Virtua Cop something-or-other I'm pretty sure. Some Bust-A-Move games. Aain, pretty sure at least on Samurai Shodown too.
Tanukitsune #13 Posted September 11, 2005 Hmm, are the Sega Smash Packs Genesis/Mega Drive games or the arcade versions? I have Out Run and the First Street Figther from the 80's but they aren't exactly a perfect adaptation if you know what I mean... I have Fatal Fury 3 and Samurai Showdown 2 for PC too... geosteve #14 Posted September 11, 2005 Has the late 90's release of Activision's licensed remake of 'Asteroids' been mentioned, it also has the original as a hidden game. these might count too... Hasbro's late 90's release of 'Centipede' as a 3D game has the original too in a somewhat modernized overhead view but plays the same. Hasbro late 90's release of 'Missile Command', a stand alone and part of Atari Revival package, has a modernized version of the original game. There's also 'Warlords' modernized in the Revival package. btw: I also have the Area 51 for windows, it plays good with the mouse but a gun would have helped.
