Is Namco Museum 50th Anniversary Arcade perfect?

Recommended Posts

I have the Gamecube version of it. It just came out in late August. For anyone, is this collection really Arcade perfect like I heard it is at online sites? Anything different with the games that are emulated?

Okay I read the whole topic that you gave me. It seems that they are emulated instead of ported or simulated.

Haven't had time to check them all out, but damned if Rolling Thunder and Galaga don't look and play exactly like the arcade game AFAICT.

That licensed retro 80s music is pretty cool too (with the exception of that joystick song which needs to go). And I like the 3D arcade cab models that are playing the attract modes. They should have let you wander a bit or pull the view back though instead of just the rotation.

And while I am not a fan of unlockable crap, the Out of Order signs on Galaga 88 and Pacmania are kind of funny, and give me some bad memories of broken arcade cabs :)

EDIT: I should mention I'm playing the XBOX version.

The first time I fired it up, I was treated to "Everybody's Workin' for the Weekend" by Loverboy, so I had to give it a big thumbs-up regardless of any faults.

It seems fairly good... definitely better than the original GameCube Namco Museum. I'm just glad those hideous cabinet art bezel graphics aren't there. But it's still pretty poor looking, IMHO. Nowhere near as clean as Midway Arcade Treasures. The games that had to be resized are really blurry looking.

That said... I have a new favorite: I had never played Bosconian before, and I LOVE it... AND since the original was a horizontal layout, it doesn't have the blurry graphics problem, either.

Skip the lackluster Game Boy Advance version... you're not missing anything if you already have Pac-Man Collection and the original Namco Museum. In fact, the conversions on both of those cartridges are generally better than the ones on 50th Anniversary.

I believe this version contains emulated games, these aren't ports I don't think unlike previous Namco efforts.

After playing more of the games, I'd have to say they must have to be emulation (XBOX). They are just entirely too perfect to be rewrites. I haven't noticed even a teeny tiny bit of difference from the real arcade games. And I've played sooooo much Galaga in my life that I can usually spot a rewrite in about a second or two.

Here's the word directly from Digital Eclipse (I was really curious rather or not I was right :)).

"We usually have someone from one of our communications groups respond to these kind of inquiries, but I felt the need to personally respond – I LOVE these kind of debates. You are the winner of the argument! They are indeed emulated using the original arcade ROMs for authenticity. Hope this helps!"

I wonder if the problem with the older games (pre-crash) being slightly out of key by one note higher than normal exists on the PS2 and XBox?

They sound fine to me so far (Xbox version).

However, anyone notice the ingame sounds being a lot quieter than the 80's menu music? Fooling with my volume controls everytime I start the game up.

Also, do the other versions have long load times to exit a game back to the menu? Games load almost instantly (Maybe 2 seconds at the most), but that exit back to the main menu sure is slow.

Its not arcade perfect, the "Pee break" doesn't exist on pac-man. This is the first thing I test to see if it is perfect, so yeah. Its very near perfect, but not completely.

How do you do that? Go right and directly up? (I forget the details)

Pretty much. See the "T" underneath the ghost cage? The right side of the T. Just stay there, in the arcade you can literally stay there for 4-8 minutes. In the namco version, you can stay there max 20 seconds...

Hmm. I just tried it and as I type this, old Pacman there has been sitting in the corner unmolested for at least three minutes.

EDIT: Seven minutes later his Paciness is still alive when I switched back to see what he was up to.

EDIT: Damn he's still loafing in the corner, how long does this cheat normally last?

Then you obviously didn't read this post.

:ponder:

I read that post, but that doesn't prove that the Namco Museum 50th collection doesn't use emulation. Digitial Eclipse developed the 50th Anniversary Collections, not Namco. Then again, it doesn't prove that it does use emulation either since Namco usually ports games, but the versions in Namco Museum 50th for GBA (not sure about other versions) have some option settings that have been in MAME for quite awhile, but have never been used in previous Namco collections. However, the GBA versions are ports, not emulation, though.

This was already answered in this thread back in September.

Not completely. I replied to the post becuase it assumed that someone didn't read a post just becuase the first two Pac-Man Worlds, games not designed by Namco of Japan, used ports and nobody directly replied to it. I heard that the first two Pac-Man Worlds were designed by a US version of Namco and the third one, which has a more innaccurate port, was designed by Blitz Games. I haven't played the port in Pac-Man World 1, but the Pac-Man in Pac-Man World 2 has sounds that are way off.

Most of the replies here address the Xbox version, but not the GCN or PS2 ones. Has it been confirmed that the PS2 one doesn't use emulation? What about the GCN one? I heard that they both use emulation elsewhere, but posts here suggest that the PS2 one may not use emulation. There isn't much about the GCN one in this thread at all. Not everything has been addressed.

Also, I'm a bit confused about Jess's reply about the GBA version. The ports in the GBA Namco Musuem 50th seemed to be more accurate than the ones in Namco Musuem GBA and Pac-Man Collection.
