NightSprinter #1 Posted September 20, 2005 I've a strange monitor cable that I'm not sure if it's for the Atari 8-bit line or otherwise. It's got a 5-pin DIN connector, plus four RCA-style connectors on the other end in the following colors: Red, Black, Yellow, White. Does anyone have a remote idea what this cable is? Fletch #2 Posted September 20, 2005 That cable is used to connect an Atari 8-bit computer to a monitor that has separate composite, chroma, luminance, and mono sound. Most old Commodore monitors had inputs like this. Essentially its a s-video cable before s-video was created.
NightSprinter #3 Posted September 20, 2005 *nods* Which colors indicate which, and is it possible to use just the Composite and Audio portion of the cables (as such I have an old model 1 Genesis that has the 5-pin DIN socket for an A/V cable).
+remowilliams #4 Posted September 20, 2005 On my four RCA connector commodore vid cable (when plugged into an Atari): Black - Chroma White - Luma Yellow - Audio Red - Composite video You can use just the composite and and audio connectors if you like. NightSprinter #5 Posted September 20, 2005 You sure the Black cable is the Chroma? It functions as audio for my Genesis.
+remowilliams #6 Posted September 21, 2005 (edited) Positive, I have it labeled. But like I mentioned that's only when plugged into the A8s. If I plug it into the C64 Red is Chroma I believe Plus your cable may have different pins to different colors. NightSprinter #8 Posted September 24, 2005 *hehs at FoeBane* Just out of curiosity, if I was to buy a TV that had component inputs (CrCbY), would it be impossible to connect the chroma and luma to the TV due to the seperate chroma inputs? I need to get a new TV anyway due to how poorly mine is doing for some emulators I have anyway.

But chances are if you get a TV that's high enough quality to have component video inputs, then chances are it's going to have an svideo jack or two. Then you just need a cable that has female RCA jacks (for the chroma/luma plugs) on one end and an svideo plug on the other. Simple to make, I've made about four or five myself for just this reason
